Hi, Dave Hyatt has posted an interesting idea on his weblog, an uber browser with RSS capabilities. I think this is a very good idea, a news reader and a browser need each other so why not integrate them in one app ? Most people use a news reader as step stone, you can see at a quick glance which sites have been updated and if the new stories or worth reading. You don't waste any time visiting sites that haven't been updated or that have new stories that aren't worth reading. If you are interested in one of the new stories you can read the full story in the web browser. Imagine what the advantages could be if the CNN news site was linked to the CNN RSS feed.

This could have some other very powerfull implications even for people that don't use this funtionality, for example we could use the RSS feed to keep us informed about when a bookmark is updated, you just have to click on a link "Keep me informed about site updates" which subscribes you to the RSS feed, the icon in the dock will show you the number of updated sites...

Apple could integrate RSS Support in safari and you wouldn't even notice it, it needs very few extra preferences in the preferences panel, RSS support could be seamlesly integrated with the browser. I understand that some people don't like an integrated web browser that reads your mail, has a built in HTML editor,... but in this case the integration of both apps can be more powerfull than both apps individually...

He also says some things about tabbed browsing

Dave Hyatt's Weblog

For those who don't know what RSS is I suggest you download NetNewsWire lite, an excellent free news reader :

NetNewsWire lite

EDIT: The question should be is this a good idea !

NetNewsWire lite is GREAT. I heard Dave Hyatt mention it but didn't really know what it was. Thanks for the link Kovacs. It's so useful because it gives me all the news in one place. Now I don't have to go to MacRumors, MacCentral, and MacNN just to get the news. I can insteaad get it all in one location, NetNewsWire on my computer.

Why do people always want to jam apps together in to one app?

App Convergence is not a good thing. App's that act as Components are a good thing.

Each does its own job well - and works with other apps - therefore you can switch out components that you don't like and replace them with better ones.

If you have these amalgamations of apps - If one bit "breaks" or is not to your taste then the whole thing is "broken" - See Mozilla vs. Chimera.

I'd hate to see Safari ("Our first priority is speed") add features that I will never use.

I don't want Safari to read my mail either - and I don't want a combined hardware DVD player/VHS player under my TV.

I use NNW Lite every day - it's great.

Dave Hyatt has a point - Browsers don't integrate properly with other apps - It's beginning with Safari's "Open in iTunes" contextual Menu (see other thread about cool safari features.)

I'd like to see the use of Services in NetNewsWire - then i could right-click an RSS feed link in the browser and Subscribe to it via a service - instead of doing the copy - paste dance.

Oh yes - and the poll read thus:

"Do you think RSS integration is a good thing or a Bad thing" - available answers "Yes" or "No"

that doesn't quite work grammatically.

The answer should be Yes - it's either a good idea or a bad idea
JLL

- My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.
