PC has Cubasis as a decent freeware multitrack sound editor. Is there anything decent for OSX? I'm using SOund Studio for 2 track stuff.

Protools free, One of the best free multitrack audio/midi programs around for both Pc and Mac.

[edit] oops! you guys proved me wrong. Ignore what I said. I was basing my comment off what I heard from a friend that uses OS 9. I guess all I can say is that I hope they come out with a free OSX version.

The original poster asked for a utility that runs on OSX. Pro Tools Free does not run on OS X. The current version only runs on OS 9 and earlier.
DigiDesign just released Pro Tools 6 for OS X, but has not publicly announced whether they will offer a "Free" version on OS X or not. We can all hope, right?
Besides that, I have used Audacity too... it's based on a cross-platform GUI library that seems to make it DOG SLOW on OS X. It crashes a lot, too, but hey, it is free. I've also tried "Sparke ME", but it's not multi-track, so it's not what you're looking for either.
Overall, let's just hope there is a Pro Tools Free for OS X soon.

Unfortunately, Pro Tools free isn't available for OSX. If you just want to edit soundfiles you could use Spark ME

I realize you are looking for a free piece of software - as was I originially. But I just purchased Bias Deck LE 3.5.1 and it's great. For only $99 ($69 if a student) you get 12 track recording. It's stable, fast, and easy to use. I was using CoolEdit on my PC before I bought my Mac and I like Bias a lot more. The quality is great too - stuff sounds terrific through my iMic. I'm running a 533 G4 with 640mb RAM and it rocks.
For $99 I'm very satisfied. I only use this for my own personal fulfillment so I can't say from a "professional" perspective how it stacks up to anything. But I can say I tried SparkME (or whatever it is), Audacity, and Jasmine. Jasmine was actually my favorite of the 3 and maybe it's something you could use - but I think he's disabling it now after 30 days (before it was in beta and free). However, Deck has the best sound quality of the bunch. I have never used anything under OS 9 - my only experience is what's under OS X. So I can't tell you how it compares to ProTools and the others.
Hope this helps you. I would check out Bias - you can get a free 15 day fully functional trial of Deck LE on the website (download): http://www.bias-inc.com
