I tried the help system in 10.2 with my 1GHz PowerBookBook , and it seems it's very slow compare the help system on my old B&W G3 with 10.1. Searches with the same keyword could take minutes in 10.2, compare to almost instantaneous in 10.1.

Does people have similar experience? Is there anything that can speed up the help system?

Does it make the difference?

I haven't done so yet, because the update is just simply too hugh (50Mb!!) to download via modem

Yes. The early Jaguar help system had known problems with slowness, etc. They're fixed now.

What do you mean by "They're fixed now" ?
Now as in 10.2.3? I still think it's slow.
...Working for Apple maybe you meant 10.2.4 or a further future release?

Do you know someone who has a highspeed internet connection that you could borrow for about 15 to 20 mins?

Yes, I think you're mistaken... its slow as all hell here on a 1 GHz PowerBook G4, with OS X 10.2.3... and just as slow on two different Power Mac G4 800 Towers.

thank god other people are finding this. I was beginning to think that it was just me being paranoid.

I'm running a gigabook with 1Gb ram and 10.2.3 and help is dog slow.

It's generally faster to just web search for the problem, which kind of defeats the object of having an on-board help.

Particularly annoying as I'm without DSL for a couple of weeks (directv changover) and dialup sucks.

Cheers,

J.

Yes. Help.app is currently so slow it's not very helpful. Removing apps you don't use anymore that have help files should help speed up the loading a little bit, however.

There's a very simple solution to the slowness of the help system (even for folks on DSL/Cable)

Unplug the network.

The help system is set to check with Apple for updates to help pages. In similar frustration to that which is expressed here i've yanked the ethernet cable and seen *massive* differences in Help system performance instantly.

This is not a solution per se, but try it.
You might be surprised.

I was going to say... on my 800G3 iBook the help is nice a zippy, but I am guessing that I have not been online while using the help system... Interesting... I'd think that the folks at Apple would be smarter than that... why not just have the software update prog DL the help updates weekly or something? Then help would be nice and fast and you could still have it up to date....
