Which one do you want to do, connect to the PC or share your files from the Mac? If you're sharing your files on the Mac, you aren't connecting to the PC at all, you're connecting to the Mac from the PC.

There's a program called DAVE from Thursby that let's your Mac see Windows PCs. They have a demo version of you wanna try it out. Or, if you have 10.2, it can find and connect to Windows PCs. As for sharing files from your Mac with a PC, I have no clue. I've tried and read various things but I can't figure it out.

I can share fine from my XP Pro box to my Mac using 10.2.3 as long as I turn on File Sharing and check-mark the option for Windows sharing. Your Mac will show up if you're on the same subnet.

Maybe it's more of a headache for older versions of Windows....I dunno.

The actual specific steps vary widely depending on the respective versions of OSs on your systems.

Is your Mac runnin Mac OS 8.x, 9.x, or X

Is your PC running Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP.

They all have different abilities built in, and need varying amounts of third-party software to achieve what you want.

I have a Windows 2000 machine, and a Mac running OSX Jaguar.
Each machine has a static IP address.

I simply identified a folder on the PC as "shared"...this can be done by right-clicking on the folder and going to Properties->Sharing.

Then I went to my Mac and from the Finder did Go menu -> "Connect to server..." and identified the IP of the PC.

That's it. That's how I share files between my work PC and Mac.
I've done the same thing with my home computers (again, Win2k and OS10.2.1). At home, where I have a cable modem that provides me a dynamically assigned IP (DHCP), I had to investigate what IP my PC had but it worked just the same. (On the PC open a CMD window, then type "ipconfig"..that will tell you what IP your machine has acquired)

keep in mind that this approach uses a folder on the PC to share files between the machines. I'm sure you could instead use a folder on the Mac to share files, but it may require purchasing software.

Also, I'm pretty sure this approach should work regardless of the Windows OS, assuming the PC OS is more recent that Windows 95. This sharing approach is based on the TCP/IP model and uses a feature of the OS X Jaguar OS...so the only requirement is to have OS X Jaguar.

hope this helps.

Q: How do I network my Mac to my PC (XP box) (#5937)
A: here is a step by step guide:

For those having problems with connecting a
10.2.2 mac to a windows xp machine...
I'm assuming you have all the following hardware:
(1) A Mac running os X 10.2.2
(2) A PC running windows XP
(3) LAN Connection on both computers
(4) A Router (in my case a linksys etherfast
cable/DSL router)

Tips in Physical Connection

(1) Some PC lan cards have a habit of being
choosy with their RJ-45 cable. Note that some
cables that work with your mac will NOT
necessarily work with a pc. Also, it DOES NOT
mean that if you can see that you have a
connection to the router (steady light on
the router corresponding to the port where you
inserted the cable) you've already successfully
connected your pc to the router. Bottom line:
check your cables, better yet buy Belkin cables,
you'll save yourself from the frustration of
using cheap network cables.

(2) For troubleshooting purposes it would be best
to physically place your pc and mac close
together so you can use shorter network cables
(kahit generic lang na rj45 cables puwede na)(sic)*.
Remember that the longer the network cable, the
higher the probability that something will go
wrong with it. Hehehe this will save you a lot of
time.

(3) On your PC: START FROM SCRATCH. The PC is a
mysterious machine. It has this habit of being
very unpredictable.

3.a Go to network places. On the left hand side
of the windows click on View Network Connections.
Make sure that you have a connection to the
router by checking
if you have the LAN Connection.

3.b right click on LAN and then go to properties
you should see the following:

b1.Client for microsoft networks

b2.File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
networks (make sure you have shared folders also)

b3.NW link netbios

b4.NW link IPX/SPX Netbios compatible transport
protocol b5.Internet Protocol TCP/IP (On TCP/IP
click properties and choose Obtain an IP address
automatically. NOW CLICK ADVANCED and go to the
WINS Tab- On the Netbios Setting ENABLE NETBIOS
over TCP/IP. This is normally on default. Enable
it!)

3.c. Ok now go to the Network places again and
click on View Workgroup Computers. Check that you
can see yourself on the Workgroup. If you CAN'T,
do this:

c1. Go to the start button and then RUN. In the
box type: "ddeshare" and then click run. You
should be able to see yourself in the workgroup
now. (Note if you can't see yourself in the
Workgroup you won't be able to connect to the
network). You can do this every time that you
don't see yourself in yourworkgroup.

3.d. if you had dial-up internet before, make
sure that you turn-off the firewalls: right click
on the dial-up and select properties. Go to the
advance tab and then make sure you have firewalls
disabled. Do this to all your dial-up
connections.
For the MAC: (Of course you should have already
connected your MAC to the router)

(1) System Preferences: Network on the TCP/IP Tab
click on the Configure Using DHCP. Do not change
anything else (Note Im assuming that all you have
is a PC and MAC on your network. If you have
another mac to network with you need additional
steps that I DON'T KNOW YET)

(2) In the Utilities folder of the Applications,
click on directory access and go to SMB and make
sure you enter the same workgroup name (Workgroup
name should not be more than 8 characters)

(3) In the accounts make sure to enable windows
login. Ok So after all that restart your PC. Check the
Ip address (Command prompt: type "ip config",
check your ip address, it should be
192.168.1.XXX). if it starts with 169, check your
network cables, your PC is not recognizing your router
and is obviously not recognizing your network. IT SHOULD BE
192.168.1.XXX. Check that you are present on the network places.
If not start network dde again. Ping your mac by checking you macs
ip address and and on the command prompt type: ping (your macs
ip address). Do the same on your mac by going to
the ping tab in network utility on your utilities
folder in applications folder. Just type your pc's
ip address. If you can ping each other, go to finder, go and
connect to server. type in your pc's ip address
(smb://192.168.1.***). YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR PC's
SHARE NAME. If you get an error=-36 check your
settings again.

Make sure that you know the name of a user on the PC, and give that user a password. Remember the username and the password. Start up file sharing on the PC - to do this you will have to name your machine, and name a workgroup. Share a folder - to do this you will have to give the folder a sharename. Remember the Name of the machine, the workgroup that it is in, and the sharename of the folder that you share.
Connect the machines together (crossover cable is simplest, regular cat 5 cabling and a little hub is an alternative)
On the mac from the 'Go' menu choose 'connect to server'.
type smb://<workgroup name>;<machine name>/<sharename>
in the dialogue that appears type your username on the windows machine, and the password for that user on that machine.
