I would like to see a Service for iCal that would allow me to select a date plus text or a date/time plus text in any program and have it added to iCal.

For instance, the following text was recv'd in an email this morning:

2/14, 8:30am meet with boss

I would like to select that text and have an item appear in the Services menu called "Add to iCal" with a submenu that lists my iCal calendars.

I realize that there are lots of forms a date can take, but it should be pretty easy to have Services parse some selected text figure out that there is a date (and time if it is present) and then use the rest of the text as the calendar entry.

Any thoughts? Would this be difficult to implement?

That would be an excellent idea... at the very least they could offer a Service to add the selected text to a new event info dialogue.

What goes into writing a Service? Is iCal scriptable? Perhaps a simple implementation of this would be to just write an Applescript and wrap it up in a service.
