double-agreed.

There's a student discount on it, and its deceptively powerful. (I've taken notes on it for a year and a half of law school, and between it's scriptability and its simplicity I can't imagine using anything else)

Thanks for the info on OmniOutliner. I downloaded a tryout version and it looks like it will fill the bill. And for $19 for teachers, it's hard to go wrong!

Stickies? Not for serious note-taking.

I've never used OminOutliner and am curious to know how it compares to Word X or any other text editing application. Is OmniOutliner the less expensive alternative to MS Office Applications or is there additional functionality?
Just my $.02 :-)

Outliner vs. Word, eh?

they're very different apps, and Outliner is certainly not a replacement for Office.

Word is, well, word. It's a huge, do-everything word processor. It's what to use if you're writing a long paper or the like when you need headers, footers, footnotes, page numbering, etc.

Outliner is an outlining application. It makes navigating, reorganizing, creating outlines easy - MUCH easier than with Word's implementation of outlining.

Excel is Excel - it's almost its own development world.

Outliner can do the lists that people frequently put into excel in a very nice way, complete with column types including time, number, rich text, plain text, and even pop-up menus.

Outliner has no power-point features itself, but when combined with OmniGraffle can make nice graphical representations of outlines, a Graffle can now export to Keynote.

So in some ways it can do much of what Office does, but Office is so huge and powerful that these products cannot really be compared.

The best thing to do is download trial copies of Outliner (and Graffle if you like) and give them a try.

OmniOutliner, all the way.

Back when I was in school, I used it to take notes in class. This thing freaking rules. I don't use it for class notes anymore (not having classes and all this) but I've found many other uses for it since then.

You won't regret spending that 20 bucks. Trust me on this. I've considered registering another copy just for the karma; it's that good.

Good advice. I'll download it tonight and give it a whirl in my training course tomorrow. I never really liked using Word to take notes.

OmniOutliner, all the way.
Thanks.

I'd like to thank all of you who gave me suggestions for a notetaking ap. I've decided on NoteTaker 1.01 by Aquamind. It's the most feature-rich and logically laid out, using a notebook with tabs approach. And it's incredibly easy to "clip" notes or parts of notes and drop them into Word. Downside is cost, about $70. But I'm going to be working on a book project with lots of research for the next year...so it's not that much. Plus it's a great way to keep a daily journal.

2nd choice: OmniOutliner. Great price, lots of features.

3rd Choice: MacJournal (shareware). This is one great program, but it doesn't allow multipage viewing or clipping.

Others mentioned on the forum just didn't have enough features.

Thanks again for your input.
