Has anybody had any success in getting a Vision enabled phone (LG 5350) to get onto the Internet using SprintPCS's USB data cable?
I would love hear some experiences on this.
Thanks!

Sprint doesn't allow you to use PCS Vision for phones with computers. You have to sign up for their PCS Vision for laptops/PDAs service which costs $100/mo for unlimited service.

That's what Sprint wants you to believe! In actuality, it's free for anybody who has a Vision plan and phone. They want people to pay the money for their Laptop cards of course...this is also the same reason SprintPCS "pulled" the USB Data cables from their site. You can only obtain these through the direct phone dealers or on eBay as far as I know.
Not bad...basically, for $50 you get UNLIMITED internet at over 140k/second...makes for a nice alternative to those who can't afford DSL/Cable yet want more speed then dial-up.

So gorickey, what are you saying? You can get the service for $50 or $100? If I have the plan I can buy a cable off ebay and use it to connect ot the net unlimitedly?
I have sprint PCS and have been holding off on a new phone because I'd like a phat one, but one also that connects to mac (bluetooth or usb) that can sync up and all that, but having the option to connect to the net when I am on trips with my pBook would rock as well.

It would be the cost of your USB cable, in this case for me (LG 5350) $50....yes, you can connect unlimitedly; however, the "syncing" software is PC only as far as I know...only syncs with Outlook Express as of now, but hopefully a full Mac integration one will be ported.

yes, gorickey's right (fairly certain)... I have PCS Vision (LG 5350)... with unlimited Vision (basically unlimited browsing on the net)...
problem is that the LG phone won't work yet in the way described (once again, I'm fairly certain)... some of the other phones PCS Vision offers will tho..
I found a group on Yahoo that discusses and troubleshoots this very topic:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/maccellphone/
seems it's entirely doable, just not with our phone.. yet : \

I have a Treo 300 and Sprint PCS Vision and I can surf the net through it just using the USB HotSync cable. It's pretty slow, though. I haven't been able to try it in a location with a stronger signal yet, so that may affect the results I've had.

Interesting, I've heard the 5350 works just fine with the right cable. I'll look more into it I guess though...

How? I've often wondered if this was possible, and it would be tremendously cool if it were.

I think I'll buy a cable and try to get things happenin'...
you mention the right cable? I saw one at Radio Shack for the LG 5350..

Really? Cool, do you remember how much it was at Radio Shack? LG wants $40 for the cable direct, and eBay wants $50....

I would love to set this up with my Treo 300 and iBook. So assuming the connection between a Treo and iBook works, what number are you actually dialing on the Treo to connect to your ISP? I have cable at my residence so I don't use a dial-up ISP. Or are you browsing via the Vision service?
Thanks!

I have a Treo300 and I've actually used it as a wireless modem before. It was a bit of a hassle to get it working and the speed was only so-so.. but that could have been due to the USB driver I downloaded.
None the less, I was able to use the following software to make my Treo300 be a USB modem for my brother's iBook. At the hospital, I was able to connect and upload photos of their new baby boy only minutes after he was born.
This thread has a lot of info on using a Treo300 as a modem:
TreoCentral
And here's the program I used:

Is uses your Vision service, you have a number that it uses to dial (#777 default) and user name/password (web/web default)...the above Mac OS X Hints link I posted has all the information...make sure to read the comments section!
Hope that helps.

Well, first, you can get it for $40/mo with 300 min talk. Second, Sprint probably monitors their network to make sure people aren't doing this (as they sell laptop service for $100/mo without voice service). Third, the speed will be 64k max. Most likely you will see speeds in the 40s.

To counter...
1.) They don't monitor, why? Because to Sprint it looks as if you are connecting to the Vision network on your phone, which is unlimited. They can't track it, yet another reason they got rid of the USB cable off their site and made Vision unlimited in the first place.
2.) There is no charge, whatsoever...
3.) The speed varies, but at the most it will be 140k; however, Vision service is promised to reach much faster speeds within the first 2 quarters of 2003, so we'll see.

Well, I installed the software and it works great!
I went to a site called www.bandwidthplace.com and tested the connection and I averaged between 70k and 130k. Not bad! Definitely better than dial up!
That software is worth $38.
Some observations.....The Treo lid must not be closed when you are connected as that will disconnect the network. Also, I did not have to enter any kind of password in the iBook's System Prefs, just the #777 number in Internet Connect.
A great way to stay connected on the road without an additional ISP besides my cable at home.

well, the radioshack cable.. i forget how much it was... go in and check 'em out
here's one from Belkin.. it includes software (for a PC, I guess - worthless), so it's a little pricey, but surely good quality..
Belkin USB to LG5350 cable
90 bucks... sheesh
let me know how things go : )

Okay, what phone are you using exactly? The LG 5350? It doesn't really make any difference; however, you need to connect the phone to your Mac and OS X will automatically "Detect a new connection", from there you will need to select your phone's modem (Qualcomm CDMA modem for the LG 5350) in the Modem Tab of TCP/IP in System Preferences. Simply use the phone number (#777) to dial in and if prompted for a user name and password, it's "web" for both...also, I think the phone has to flipped open in order to work, if not...it will not connect (can't verify)!
I hope this makes sense. Give it a shot, if it doesn't work, I would suggest reading my first post on this thread and reading all of the Mac OS X Hints link I posted, including the comments section.
GOOD LUCK!

i'm using Jaguar.. 10.2.3 and the LG 5350..
and it didn't detect a thing... in the Apple System Profiler, however, it sees a USB device is plugged in.

Does the modem show up in the pull down list? Also, what "Network Port Configurations" do you have active/showing?

The pull down list and the Network Port Configurations both show:
Internal Modem
Built-In Ethernet

just those two.. : \
not sure if you know or not -- should my phone charge when connected thru USB? 'cause if it's supposed to.. it's not
doesn't light up when connected either.

No, I doubt it charges through the USB cable...almost all the pictures I've seen of the set-up (on eBay) have the phone in the charging cradle...the sellers of those auctions also mention "OS X Drivers they'll include on a CD"....hmmm!

The only thing I can think of is that you need either the SprintPCS USB Data Cable (can find only on eBay now) or the official LG USB Data Cable, which is sold out on their site....

surfin' with it right now.
don't know why, but it wouldn't recognize it for the past few days.. I happened to log out of my admin account (to try and get my new 48x internal CDRW to burn in iTunes).. logged back in as admin, and voila..
I burn reallly fast CDs, and I can surf the net via my phone's modem!

forgot to mention... I'm using 'au cdmaOne C413S by Sony' modem script.. not the Sprint PCS or PCS Vision script.. neither of the Sprint scripts want to work for me..
and on the phone, under Settings/Data-In/Method I chose RS-232C(COM Port) rather than USB.. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I only get connections when I have it set up this way.
hope you get it!

sorry.. my bad...
you're dealing with nimrods... real big on the front of the FutureDial package, it says 'For LG Models 1010, 5350, VX1, VX10'
it comes also with a separate software CD for PC, but I left it behind at the store... the guy's like... 'ya see, that there cable's for a peeCeee, now, and uh...it's not gonna work on that apple you have there'
anyhoooooooo
ps... once you have everything set up, try try try to get it to connect...
with your phone's screen open, and clicking 'connect' in Internet Connect, watch the phone for the screen that comes up that says it's calling 3G so and so, #777
even without changing settings, it may just work the 5th time with the same settings..
oh, and it works too with the clamshell closed..
oh.. and be sure to dial #777, and not 777 ... I'm an idiot, and I chose the latter
my first 10 times tryin' to connect..
gotta go to work..
enjoy

Well, I went back and got the cable (they truly are IDIOTS)...but, can't connect and I've followed your steps as far as I know.
If you don't mind, can you write out a step for step instruction guide for how to get this thing working? For example, please relay your EXACT OS X Network settings and your LG 5350 settings.
Sorry for the trouble...
Thanks.

Faster speeds need newer phones. It is easy to see whether or not they are using it with a computer, and CDMA2000 has never exceeded 70kbps even in lab enviornments. There is no way that you will ever see more than 70kbps.

Wrong, fast speeds need newer software upgrades ...not new phones!
It's not easy to see with a computer...Sprint doesn't track it.

I'm one of the non-nimrod Radio Shack employees. I had a chance today to discuss this with my Sprint PCS Sales Representative.
The official reasoning for not offering this capability is that too much of it will effectively bring down the network. There is only so much bandwidth to spare. It is unlikely that your service will be disconnected due to this. However, there have been reports of some people being hit by the per kilobyte charges. Long connections with large downloads are the tip-off. If you use it lightly doing simple things like checking email, chatting over instant messenger, short web surfing, then you are likely to get away with it. It would be a VERY bad idea to hook one of these things up to your desktop computer to use it as your primary internet connection.
I did discuss with him the fact that the competition is offering these capabilities while Sprint has completely dropped out of this market, even though they are very proud of having a 3G network. Eventually, the high-ups will get their heads out of their respective butts and start offering this kind of stuff. I made a personal vote to say that consumers would be happy with a 56k connection over the phones, even if the network has significantly more bandwidth, if it meant that the service would be officially offered. If you want the service, write a letter to sprint saying so.
To summarize: don't download mp3's over this; don't get on MacNN's fora over this; do what you have to do and then get off the connection. You should be fine if you go light on it and just focus on the wireless aspect as opposed to the broadband aspect.

I am so glad I read this thread!!!
I have a Samsung SPH-A500. I also bought a data cable for it a month ago for my IBM Thinkpad laptop. I never thought in a million years it would work on my new 12" PB.
I plugged the data cable into my phone and then into my PB. A message popped up saying USB modem detected. I almost crapped my pants! Then I went into 'network' preferences. I clicked the 'Show' dropdown box and 'SAMSUNG CDMA Technologies' was one of the choices. Then I clicked on the 'modem' tab. There is a drop down box to select your modem. In this dropdown was one for 'Sprint PCS Vision'. I still couldn't get it to connect.
I found an interesting thread looking through the Yahoo forum posted above. One guy gave directions on dialing Sprint. In the 'PPP' tab, select 'PPP Options' at the bottom and unselect 'Use TCP Header compression'. The guy said this reduces latency. I don't know if it does or not, but whatever. Then on the 'PPP' page, enter 'web' for account name, 'web' for password and '#777' for Telephone Number. I then went into Internet Connect and clicked 'connect'. Sure enough, I could surf the net or whatever.
It isn't the fastest. I ran DSLreports.com speed test and got 83kbps down and 57kbps up. That's faster than a 56k modem and it's totally wireless!! Running the same test with my cable modem gave me 1705kbps down and 279kbps up.
Technology is SO cool!!
edit: The Yahoo forum guy also said that the latest version of OS X has these cell phone drivers built in. So, make sure you've got that latest version.

TCP Header Compression *ON* should increase general speed. Latency would depend on how long it takes to compress and decompress.

I reran the speed tests just now using TCP compression on and off.
Off:
79kbps down
57kbps up
On:
55kbps down
57kbps up
It's weird how I consistently get 57kbps up. Even last night I got that during the test that I got 83kbps down.
From these tests, it seems to me that having TCP compression off is beneficial.

Alright, now I know I'm leaving TCP compression off.
I loaded the .Mac page from Apple's site. Then I hit reload with TCP compression on. It loaded in 32 seconds.
Then I disconnect, turned TCP compression off and reconnected. I then hit reload again on the .Mac page and it loaded in 20 seconds.
I used a stopwatch for the timing.

Help... I have an 800mhz iBook w/ Jag. A 5350 and the Radio Shack future dial cable. Yet I'm not getting a dialog box nor is the phone showing up under the Network System Panel.
Ahh... I so want this to work. Any insight as to how to make this sucker work?!

heyyyaa... i've been away.. i'll admit... i'm kinda broke..
i was using AOL for free for the last couple of months, and it just cut me off... so I've been offline for a few days.. and, frickin' - A, I can't get the FutureDial cable to connect either.. anymore, at least..
i was under the impression for the entire time owning the cable(bout 2 weeks) that it may have a faulty wire/connection or something inside, as it seemed to connect fine with the cable sitting a certain way, but move it and it wouldn't connect..
so i took the thing apart
and found no bad connections
then i put it back together
still doesn't work.. countless times trying to connect (both with the setup that it DID work with, and with other settings i.e. diff modem scripts, choosing 'USB' for data-in on the phone, etc.)
so I'm gonna go get another FutureDial cable tomorrow and see if it does the trick...
GoRickey.. I looked through the thread and I do include every possible setting to get the LG on the net using Jaguar...
I've got some work to do, I'll try to post everything again (in a single post) as to how I got it working, but eh... it's not working now... maybe a new cable
anyhow.. yea.. i plunked down the card on Earthlink dial-up.. bah.. no high speed available in this house

what kind of problems? I love mine... can't find a single fault (well, maybe a couple)...
also, I just learned from my friend with the A500.. he has about 1/4 the amount of memory than the 5350.. he maxed his out with ringers and pics, and I've got tons more room to add stuff..
