I want to build a unix gnuplot (not the MacOS X version!), because the ?native' version of gnuplot has problems writing ps-files (it takes forever ...).
I have downloaded the latest stable sources (3.7.3), tried the usual ./configure make make install routine, but make failed. It complains:
gcc: -ObjC: linker input file unused because linking not done
(oh, it detects OS X alright ...). Any suggestions. I would be glad if someone explained me why this is happening ...
Thanx.

have you tried the fink version of gnuplot? or is that what you mean when you say the "mac os x" version?
at least, you can look at the patches that fink is applying to the source to see if that offers any hints.

Nope, I don't use fink after it completely destroyed my TeX installation once.
Maybe I'll give it another shot.
Is there any way to apply those patches separately?

fink patches are in patch(1) format. "man patch" for more info.
the version of gnuplot in fink is 3.8h, not sure how that differs from 3.7.3.

I'm curious about the TeX installation. Was this an installation that you did by hand? If so, did you tell fink about it? (as in "fink install system-tetex", to tell it you installed it yourself) Also, did you tell the fink people exactly what happened?
We're all Mac users here. We all pretty much think you would be insane for knowing about fink and choosing NOT to use it. I use Mac OS X precisely because I have experience with Linux. I got tired of compiling new versions by hand when the old ones didn't work correctly. (Here, I'm specifically referring to the kernel, which I've realized will NEVER work correctly.)

I use Gerben Wierda's i-Installer to download teTeX and stuff ...
I think I'll give fink another shot then ...
