Free download, $19 shipping, upgrade price, full price?
With or without debug code?
Snappier?
Finally includes Rage Pro drivers?
Just the usual questions.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, 10.3 should be free and then charge for 10.5

I don't think that Apple has ever told their phone support about future OS X releases. They usually just know as much as we do.

I guess it will be free because according to LQX, there won't be a 10.3

The next upgrade will probably be a paid upgrade...
I just hope there is an upgrade price and we don't have to dump another 129...
I wouldn't be pissed if they chardged $30 or something...

This statement is exactly why version numbers (i.e., 10.x) are in the hands of product marketing, and really have no bearing on development. Development is proceeding exactly as it always has been proceeding; whether it's called 10.anything, or whether or not it's free, has no bearing on it.

This doesn't make any sense. I have quite a few good friends who for for Apple here in Austin (tech. support is based here) and all the people I know state again and again: 'We're the last people to know."
Also, a quick phonecall to three of my friends who are SE's confirmed the same thing: No mention of 10.5 anywhere.

10.5 is the right move. they can't keep in the X's forever, but is a good marketing stratagy.

I guess it will be Mac OS X Panther.
So thex can keep their beloved "X" and you don't have to care whether it is 10.5 or 10.3. Anyway, this discussion is pointless. It's not the numbering that makes it, it's the features and improvements.

Ya right dude, Apple is already shipping training CD's for a product they haven't even hinted at.
Think Apple can sell us another 10.x upgrade this soon to 10.2?

This is such BS. 10.2 just shipped a few months ago. They are not going to be offering another point release until at least 9-12 months from the last one.
And I find it highly unlikely that they will suddenly jump to 10.5. There is no reason for it whatsoever. They have already established that major revisions to OSX will be point increments. Jumping to 10.5 would bring them back into the naming scheme of whole numbers being major revisions. This would imply that 10.5 would be a significantly larger update than either 10.1 or 10.2, which the next release will not be, and that 11.0 will be monumentally different. It's all just too confusing. Besides, they have quite a bit invested in the marketing of OSX as OS Ten. They are not going to lose the momentum by being prematurely forced out of the current naming scheme.
The next major release will be 10.3. It will likely be shipped for free (shipping/handling for $19.95 of course) and will probably be demo'd at WWDC and ship in 'summer'. I'm least sure of the pricing, but if the schedule is any sooner or the naming is different, I'll eat my shorts.
Someone get this guy a prescription for reality.

I think Apple has learned their lesson from previous upgrades like this. If I remember correctly, 10.0 and 10.2 were the two most pirated Operating Systems of all time (during the beta stages). Apple is now giving it only to internal people is my guess, and keeping it as secluded as possible. And I do think they will charge for it, as a "x".5 and "x".0 are considered major upgrades. (I.E. OS 8.1 - OS 8.5)

Question the man's information from his supposed frineds at Apple, but why attack his typing? As it's bad typing not spelling you are pointing at.

from a marketing point of view, it's more profitable for apple to make the "X" last as long as possible ...
and IMHO ... the reason Jaguar is called like that it's because it needs to be recognized from 10.1, and 10.0, etc. if you name it plain 10.2 people get confused.
then again as the X sells. I presume Appe would like to go 10.3 ...
just my two cents.

People, calm down. I'm sure we will all find out by summer/late fall or in 2004. IMHO, I believe that what Liquidity X is saying is true. We are awaiting the release of 10.2.4 very shortly (as it was clearly displayed as the OS version in the MWSF PowerBooks). But who's to say that Apple has to follow any kind of numerical system. Yes 10.3 seems logical with the 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.2.1, 10.2.2, 10.2.3, and soon 10.2.4. With the upcoming IBM 970, perhaps Apple believes that this is a significant improvement and/or change and thus the 10.5 jump. Since we are all on here rambling anyways, it is FUN to speculate.
People get so angry and take things so personally when something someone says doesn't fall in line with what they think. Some people have said that Apple won't do this and can't do that. Truth is, we are pawns in the marketing game of life.
Remember right before the MWSF 2003? We had people in all sorts of "camps" up in arms either defending or condeming Apple's charging for the iApps (now iLife). Some folks even said Apple was finished and that it would soon go broke b/c how could it possibly survive at 3-5% of the global market share. Then MWSF 2003 happened: new 12" & 17" PowerBooks, new Safari browser, new KeyNote, and new iLife. That quieted the doubters for a while until the next release or rumor of an upcoming release.
I think that's what keeps me coming back to MacNN. The people are PASSIONATE and they strongly hold on to their views (sometimes too strongly ). But after all is said and done, we still love our Macs and forgive Jobs and Apple for their shortcomings/mistakes/sins.
One thing I would bet money on is this: There is NO other group of computer users who are as passionate and as knowledgeable as Mac users. They may be knowledgeable, but NEVER as PASSIONATE. (Damn, this last paragraph would make a great Apple switcher's commercial!).

Spot on. Except for the price, I think.
I'm hoping for staggered pricing (something like $99 for 10.2 users, $129 for 10.1 and OS 9 users) but it sure won't be free...

Having managed a Apple Specialist with a large service dept for just over 3 years I can tell you this:
Apple has never pre-released any significant training on OS' or Hardware in the new reign of Jobs. Not via AppleMailbox, not via Learn & Earn, and not via their BootCamps.
Take that however you want to.
Memos on training for an unannounced version of a well guarded OS? Um, no, I don't think so.

Anyway I think apple will release 10.3 before and then 10.4 then 10.5. 10 (X) is not something that you want to just rollover I mean 11 wtf. I think they will milk 10 for all it is worth.

Apple could jump to 10.5 and still remain in the 10.x range for a long time. All they have to do is release 10.9, 10.99, 10.999...

Jesus, Apple is gonna keep on with the right way of doing updates
We are stuck with Mac OS X v.10.2.3 and then the next major upgrade is 10.3
Apple is doing it right with not skipping huge numbers... it seems very odd to me why people are complaining, is it just that you have to pay for a .1 update? Then don't think of it as that... take away the 10 in front and you are paying for a major upgrade, as you are
We will only see Mac OS X v.10.5 after we see 10.3 and 10.4 and yes, there will eventually be
Mac OS X v.11.0
ohkay? everyone happy? come on people, think a little!
