Try something for me.
A friend of mine tried iPhoto2 & iMovie 3 and he said that all the images you use in iMovie from iPhoto have to use the Ken Burns effect.
The only way to place still images in iMovie is by importing them. Is this still true in the final version?

OK first impressions :-
iPhoto is just as slow as before. I have just imported 2600 photos, and it is so slow when you try to scroll up and down the Photo Library.
I have 6000+ photos and this will not work for me :-(((( Which means I loose the integration to iMovie and iDVD as well. Bit of a let down.
This is running on a G4 800Mhz iMac as well, thought it would be better than this.
iMovie seems OK, much better in a window.
You can put photos into a movie from iPhoto, without doing an import. To stop the ken Burns effect you need to set the Start and Stop Zoom levels to 1.0
Will report on things again later.

Oh man, if iPhoto hasn't sped up any, I'm gonna freak. This was my number-1 feature for iPhoto 2: speed.
I found 1.x OK if you sort by film roll and keep the rolls mostly collapsed, but man. How could they ignore the reality of iPhoto's slowness?

The news of persistent slowness are very discouraging. I do not know how many time I submitted reports to Apple about how damn slow iPhoto is.
Anyhow, I hope the archive feature will save me some trouble. I just wish I could set some albums to "sleep" mode, so that they do not show up in the main library unless I tell them too. Argg.
Anyhow, how are the enchance and archive features working?

Well I tried the Ken Burns effect, if you don't have a zoom and you don't set a start and end point for movement, then the photo stays put.
It's called user control, it does default to zoom, but it's easy to set the photo so that nothing happens.
Well speed for me seems the same as before, I have removed all my photos, and will only put new one's in as they come along.
I suppose this is OK as I usually work on the new stuff and the old one's are archived really.
That way at least I can use the integration to make movies and DVD's.

I wonder how iPhoto 2 displays these images exactly. Keynote has the same problem.
Is this a flaw in the implementation of QE or of the software?
Anyways, WHERE IS THAT CANADIAN ILIFE/KEYNOTE EDUCATIONAL DEAL?

Photo Enhance has mixed results.
Can seem to make no difference to many photos, but then that is OK as they look fine before.
Did make a few look quite a bit better, one's with grey washed out sky's seemed much brighter.
Made a few go to bright / colourful, seems to boost greens quite a bit where you have trees etc.

I have a "beta" of iPhoto2 and I must say that the speed has improved. It's not 2x faster, but it is faster (try to rotate an image in iPhoto1 and then in iPhoto2... it's like night and day)
I have around 3000 photos and must say that it works better. (Still, not great...)
I also like the way that it exports photos (for uploading to a FTP site. It's a little smarter now, but I had wished that they would add graphics to the program)
Oh well. I love the backup options!

I too am concerned about iPhoto speed. Its currently so slow that I completely gave up on it and simply use the finder and image capture. Hopefully, the iLife version will make it useable.

Well I have given up on iPhoto 2, for me it just can't cope with over 1000 images at a workable speed.
I to will be going back to the Finder for my main archive, but will use iPhoto for the times I need to make a movie, dvd, homepage, etc.
I can't even order prints from Apple with it, so it's back to Fotango for us in the UK.

I actually took the time to read some of what it says on Apple's website and it apppears as though you can now rename film rolls in iPhoto 2.
Making the whole feature of diplaying by film roll a lot more usefull as you can keep them collapsed (!). And you can have more then one film roll in your album, so its like having sub-albums (!!). Ability to rename them, just made the whole feature a lot more usefull.
Can't wait to get my hands on it.
mitchell_pgh: What Mac do you have? iPhoto may be damn fast on the new DP1.43 I'm asking cuz Parky here with iMac G4-800 is saying its slow.
Personally, I was expecting a speed improvement akeen what we saw happen to iCal. I could not use it when it was 1.0 ... and I mean it was not usable at all, but now that it is 1.x.x or whatnot ... it nearly flies!

I don't understand why Apple are saying that renamable rolls are a big deal in 2.x, because I appear to be able to do that in 1.1.1? Or are they talking about something different?

You can rename Film rolls, but you can't have Film Rolls within an Album, it does not work.

Perhaps I missed it in 1.1.1, since I have not tried to rename rolls since 1.0. Then it was impossible.
Not sure if they are making a big deal out of it, just a small caption on their site. I would not have read it had it not been for the graphic.
Sppedwise. The 1000s of photos you speak of are not from a Canon EOS D60 at full resolution, I hope (Wish I had one of those babies ... saving up for one as we speak). I have just under 1000 photos in my iPhoto library (943 to be exact) and all are max size/quality from a 4MP camera. I had a little over 1000, but had to rebuild my library cuz something screwed up big time. Anyhow, so far I have found iPhoto to be just slow. Rainbow spinning wheel of death slow at times, but never had to force quit though. Mind you, I have iBook 600, 640 RAM and 8MB ATI Rage ... measely, but 12" PB was not around at the time
I use Image Capture for some of my photos as well. And have found this shareware app, called PhotoGrid X (look on versiontracker.com can remember the site right now). It is very very good for browsing, organizing your photos. Good viewer too.

Yeah, in 1.x, film rolls are basically import sessions, and you can't add to or remove from them without erasing the images from the database and re-importing them.
They work OK as an organisation tool if you're disciplined (or near your Mac) enough to empty the camera after every 'group' of pictures you shoot.

Apple knowledge base article which explains how to import still images into iMovie 3.
To import still images into iMovie 3:
1. Drag the image files onto the iMovie application icon, or choose Import from the File menu.
2. Press Command-period (.) to cancel the pan/zoom effect.

There were RUMORS that iDVD3 would work with external firewire DVD-R burners.
Any info in the iLife "read me"s or Help sections that can confirm or deny this?
Thanks

What useless bastards. One year, one whole year and still no print or book ordering.
Anyway, I refer you to an earlier post of mine - http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=139781
Whilst the point Developer makes is correct, in that nowhere does it explicitly say print ordering will be available in the UK, I argue it easily implies ordering will be available.
Let's start the writing campaign. Parky, I know you're up for it. Though maybe stay away from Steve's email address as your name maybe flagged as Junk. Let's stick to AppleUK.

At 1.0 zoom, the position cannot move as the image does not go into frame beyond it's literal edge.
So at 100% size, the image is basically static, and Ken Burns is not in the picture. He'd off somewhere in Africa. At this point, what you hae is a setting for length of time that the image stays on screen. This is where the time was changed within the picture (clip) on the timeline in iM2.

I can't be bothered chasing Apple for UK print ordering. There is a better service from :- www.fotango.com
Good selection of print sizes, good prices and fast delivery.
The 30 inch by 20 inch posters are great at £9.99. And they arrive in 3 working days !!

Actually at 1.0 zoom you can still move the image in the frame.
You get black edges around the photo, in the preview and in the movie.
It could actually be useful, as it gives you a photo that slides onto the screen from black. A bit like a transition I suppose but with more movement control, and zoom should you want it.

iTunes 3 does not get updated when you install iLife if you have the current version installed.
The version on iLife is 3.0.1 (66) which I think is the exact same vesrion as before the install.
As Steve said at the Keynote, iTunes 3 was ready for iLife when it was first released, all the hooks where already there.

Whilst the point Developer makes is correct, in that nowhere does it explicitly say print ordering will be available in the UK, I argue it easily implies ordering will be available.
It's not as if Apple (UK) can get away with saying it 'Dificult' or that there are no reputable companys capable of doing it. LOOK other companys to send pic's to.
Boots, the Chemist They could even scrap the home delivery using these people, most people have a Local Boots they could call in to to pick up the Photos.
NTL, a CABLE TV/Internet Company? this pages document name is even iphotos open the page & take a look at the URL.
Fuji Labs a reputable processing Co, i would have thought. Not Apple aparentely.
All these companys offer Photo organisation/editing/uploading apps (Windows only, I think).
What is so hard about offering UK prints, all these other companies seam to manage?
addition: Google search for 'UK Digital Photo Prints' look hundreds of results

Good selection of print sizes, good prices and fast delivery.
The 30 inch by 20 inch posters are great at £9.99. And they arrive in 3 working days !!
Fair enough. Fotango looks interesting, I'll bare them in mind. I signed up at Nikon FotoShare since my cmera is a Nikon. But what I really want is irks me is the lack of book printing.

Better still why don't Kodak offer the same service worldwide (they are the company who produce the Apple prints)
Kodak already have there own global online photo print service called www.ofoto.com
I have used this service as well, and they ship quite happily to the UK.

UK users should also give www.colormailer.co.uk a look as well. I've used them for a while and they have OS X client software for uploading photos. At 22p for a 6x4 print theyr'e a good price as well. The prints are actually sent over from Switzerland I believe.
I'd be a mug and pay the extra though if you could order prints straight through iPhoto in the UK.

Exactly, I'll quite happily pay in USD, and then pay extra for them to be shipped over here.

There's only one word for it: lame
I bet they didn't even try to get a deal outside North America. Ofoto (Kodak, isn't that their partner?) already delivers world-wide so why can't we order prints from inside iPhoto?
What really hurts is Apple's sarcasm on their German web site:
You can make great looking photo albums with iPhoto. Just print them on your inkjet printer and take to sheets to a copy shop who can bind them to a book.
