I backed up my files copied my address book data (Addresses.addressBook folder) and then erased my hard disk, installed jag and discovered that the new address book prog can't read the old files or folder.

I have tried using the program pacifist to install the original OS X address book program under jag but it fails to load each time.

I know NOW that I needed to export my addresses as vcards. But what the hell do I do now except painstakingly go thru' the files using textedit and fish out all the data? Or reinstall OSX then jag again (would take about 9 hours on my beige!!, including backing up)

Many thanks!

Probably the old Address Book needs a framework that's no longer present in Jaguar.

You can check to see if that's the case by opening the Console and watching it as you try to launch the app. If it complains about not being able to find a framework, that's your problem.

In this case, your best bet would unfortunately be to launch Address Book from a working copy of 10.1 and converting the files to vCards.

Do you have a spare partition or external FireWire disk you could install 10.1 on?

Well - this may be too late for you ...

Transferring old AddressBook entries:

Your new 10.2 installation will have a ~/Library/Application support/AddressBook folder (where '~' = your home folder, ie /Users/yourshortname). Delete this and its contents. Create a new folder ~/Library/Addresses, and copy into it your old 10.1.5 Address Book.addressbook file (from the same folder in your 10.1.5 disk).

Now start the AddressBook application - it will convert your old addresses, creating a new ~/Library/Application support/AddressBook folder. Once you are happy with this, you can trash the ~/Library/Addresses folder you just created (and its contents)

Oh and if you have already started populating your new address book, export all its contents first as vcards. Then when you've done the above conversion, import the vcards again.
