(or the "Title" attribute of an <A> tag?) Just something I was thinking about this Friday afternoon...

They display the alt attribute when the corresponding image cannot be displayed. That's what the alt attribute is for.

Why they don't display the title attribute (which can actually go on any tag, not just A; this is what's supposed to be used for tooltips)? That I don't know. They haven't gotten around to it, I guess.
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

I guess it's supposed to be a text string that goes in the status bar (like when you hover your mouse over a link you normally get the target URL).

uhm. no.

the status bar is supposed to display the URL of the link you're hovering only.

You can access the status by javascripting your way into manipulating window.status, but it's a bit 1996 to do that.

Title is supposed to display as a little hovering bit of text.

That is correct.. Here's a little shot taken from IE on Windows... The "Title" shows when hovering over a regular <A> link that I have setup... The screenshot didn't capture the arrow, but it's hovering over the BoingBoing link (hence the link colored orange)...

I don't know about the windoiw status as it was javascripting "onmouseover" tag or something. You're right about not doing it since 96, because I forgot how to.

Alt text is for when images don't display, eiterh in loading or by error. Surf with images turned off and you'll come across some. Lately, alt tags are mainly used for search engine optimization, however some penitalize for alt tags. They don't display in the status bar.
