I was reading through the iMovie 3 threads and someone mentioned removing extra languages from the package might help with speed. I figure "Why not... I'm not using the other languages"
So I dropped them... speed increase.. cool

I told my friend about it, being the crazy guy he is, he removed them from ALL of his iApps. He said he saw an improvement. So I says I says "Gosh, I wonder if I'll see an improvement"

So I give it a whirl.
iPhoto 2: faster
iTunes 3: Not that it was slow, but a bit more responsive..

and the big one:
iCal: HUGE difference.

I recommend you try it. Look around for .lproj folders in Applcation packages. (usually in /app/Contents/Resources/)

NOTE: Save the language you actually use..
for me it's the English.lproj

Thanks for reminding me of this. I did this already a couple of months ago, but forgot it meanwhile.

BTW, you can delete the languages also by opening the information pane -> languages -> remove the ones you don't want. It has exactly the same effect than opening the package and removing things there.

The speed increase is not that great, if there is one at all, for me.

Remove all localizations from your machine:
Code:
find -x / \! \( -path 'dev*' \) \( -path '*Japanese.lproj' -o -path '*Spanish.lproj' -o -path '*Portuguese.lproj' -o -path '*German.lproj' -o -path '*Italian.lproj' -o -path '*French.lproj' -o -path '*Norwegian.lproj' -o -path '*Dutch.lproj' -o -path '*Finnish.lproj' -o -path '*Korean.lproj' -o -path '*Danish.lproj' -o -path '*Swedish.lproj' -o -path '*Icelandic.lproj' -o -path '*de.lproj' -o -path '*en_GB.lproj' -o -path '*en_AU.lproj' -o -path '*es.lproj' -o -path '*fr.lproj' -o -path '*it.lproj' -o -path '*ja.lproj' -o -path '*nl.lproj' -o -path '*da.lproj' -o -path '*fi.lproj' -o -path '*ko.lproj' -o -path '*ni.lproj' -o -path '*no.lproj' -o -path'*pt.lproj' -o -path '*zh_CN.lproj' -o -path '*zh_TW.lproj' -o -path '*ca.lproj' -o -path '*cs.lproj' -o -path '*el.lproj' -o -path '*eu.lproj' -o -path '*fr_CA.lproj' -o -path '*hu.lproj' -o -path '*id.lproj' -o -path '*pl.lproj' -o -path '*pt_BR.lproj' -o -path '*ru.lproj' -o -path '*sk.lproj' -o -path '*sl.lproj' -o -path '*sw.lproj' -o -path '*th.lproj' -o -path '*tr.lproj' -o -path '*sv.lproj' \) -type d -exec rm -R \{\} \; >& /dev/null

Actually, it just deactivates them. If you do a option-I after having unchecked all the languages you don't want, you'll see that the program takes up as much space as before. I think it just tells the program not to query those language packs when loading, but doesn't save you any disk space.

Sorry to reply to myself, but I found out that by unchecking the boxes in the information pane simply prompts the .lproj directories not used by the user to be moved to a new folder called Resources Disabled.

You may or may not want to delete this folder. For iCal 1.0.2, the size of my Resources Disabled folder, which contains all language packs other than English and French, is 15.5 MB. So if HD space is at a premium for you, delete them.
