I have been trying to find a way to change the Standard preset in a print dialog. In particular, I want to switch of the collate option.

I know I can create another preset, but this requires reqctivation each time the application using the dialog is started.

Any suggestions welcome.

I haven't actually played with printing presets, but I would do the following:

1) Make the changes I want and save the preset as "New."
2) Delete the preset named "Standard."
At this point you would be done as only one preset exists for the print dialogue to display, but I'm picky about things, so…
3) Rename "New" to "Standard."

Now, again, only one preset exists for the print dialogue to use. The only unknown I can see is if you are able to delete the existing preset; Apple may not intend you to do this, but I don't see why.

I tried that, but you cannot delete the "Standard" preset.

Hmm…well, try this:

1) Make a new preset.
2) Open the file "com.apple.print.custompresets.plist" found in "~/Library/Preferences/"
3) Change the string to the name of the preset you made in step 1.

I don't know if you need to reopen a document or anything before this works, but the idea is to tell the print dialogue that a different preset was used last and thus should be used now. Then again, I don't know if this will work at all.

Don't forget to send Apple feedback.
