Hoooookay. I got Candybar to change some icons around. Seemed to work fine, put some new icons in, Applied the changes, restarted...and my Finder WILL NOT RUN. Nada. Some applications seem to be affected as well...I'm typing this in Omniweb because Mozilla shuts down after a bounce. So does Proteus, and a few more.

This is weird. I launched Omniweb through my Dock menu. There isn't even a menu bar in the Finder...nothing. Clicking does nothing, and Cntrl-clicking just says "Finder Not Running."

Hmmmm. Anyone seen this before?

This is nuts. I opened Candybar, restored to Default, restarted...no difference. STILL no Finder. Many apps quit just after they start loading...Mozilla, Explorer, iTunes, iPhoto, etc. Others (like Candybar, Omniweb, System Prefs, Terminal) open fine. I have no idea what's going on. This is messing with my mind here.

I do NOT need this right now. I've got a major Bio lab report I've been working on due in a couple days....arrrrrrgh.

All the apps that were in my Dock will not launch, and many that weren't are also broken (some give the "application unexpectedly quit" dialog, others just disappear). Many others (all of which weren't in my Dock) are fine. The Finder simply won't load...I just get a blank desktop with a floating time and menu bar items in the top corner...not even a menu.

Sigh. Why me?

Have you tried logging in as root? As long as you don't tweak your system while you're at it, it's worth a shot. CandyBar messed up my some of my icons, but nothing too serious. Good luck.

LOL. This is just too funny. I've found ONE application from my Dock that will launch...Audio Hijack seems to work. That's about it. As well, I can't throw Dock icons out...dragging them to the desktop won't make them puff away, they just pop back into place. Maybe it's because the Finder's not loaded? I have no idea.

Hmmmm. Ridiculous.

Have you tried the obvious? That is repairing the disk and the disk privileges using Disk Utility after booting in the OS X CD?

It seems there is something wrong with your system or with your preferences. Have you tried loggin in as other user and see if everything works?

I created another account, logged in but have the same problems. I repaired the disk (extent allocation file) and the permissions from the Jaguar CD...all the permissions were completely messed up. Every one, I think, it took over a half hour to repair. I don't screw around with permissions, either, so I have no idea what did that.

This is frustrating. I can't figure out why ~50% of my applications (including the Finder) seem to quit seconds after they start.

Here's the catch...Stuffit Expander is one of the applications that won't open. I can't unstuff files that way.

He has a command-line version, so I emailed him to check it out. Maybe he has an idea for me.

The guys at Panic also sent an Icon Restore app, but with the same problem. I'm waiting to hear from them as well.

Just wondering (II myself have had no major problems with CandyBar), did you change anything else while you were at it?

I found that if I changed the name of my hard drive, Mozilla wouldn't work and I would have to do a complete reinstall. I mention this because I at first blamed the problem on CandyBar because I would only change the drive name when I had changed its icon (and I wanted a name to match it).

I admit, this doesn't necessarily explain why so many other apps are acting screwy, but it's something to look at.

Nope, I didn't. The only problem I had was this:

When I first opened Candybar, I changed an icon or 2, then had to leave for a couple hours. I applied the changes, and quit but didn't restart.

When I came back, I opened it up again, made the rest of my changes, and Applied. Halfway through, the progress bar gave me an error. I figured I had to restart with my earlier changes first, so I restarted, and everything worked fine with the original couple changes I had made. I opened Candybar again, made the rest of my changes, Applied them without a problem, restarted....and this was the result. Everything's wacked out.

I don't run any themes, and I didn't install anything else yesterday.

What's confusing me is the seemingly random selection of apps that are affected by this.

Mail, Mozilla, Finder, iTunes, iPhoto, Quicktime, Media Player, Unreal Tournament, Painter, MSN, GraphicConverter, DivX Validator, Limewire, Appleworks, DVD Player, RealOne Player, iChat, Sherlock, Preview are all apps that won't load.

Address Book, Audio Hijack, PixelNhance, System Prefs, Omniweb, Calculator, Terminal, TextEdit, Omnigraffle, Stickies, Image Capture, LiveJournal, Candybar, Chess, all open and seem to run fine.

Anyone else see a pattern? I don't.

I just updated my son's iMac to 10.2.5. After rebooting, I had the same problem...no Finder, no Finder menubar. All of my other apps ran fine (of course, the only ones I could get to were the ones in the Dock).

Disk utility didn't help. Neither did repairing permissions.

So I booted into firewire target disk mode and connected it to my iBook. In System/Library/CoreServices/ the Finder on the iMac was about 500KB larger than the Finder on my iBook. Apparently, something hosed it.

So I went to my Terminal, logged in as root, deleted the folder Finder.app on the iMac, and copied my Finder.app over there.

Then I rebooted the iMac, logged in as >console to get to the console, logged into that as an admin, repaired the permissions (sudo diskutil repairPermission /) and rebooted again.

Everything is now working just fine.
