AARGH!

Sorry, it might be late but I just upgraded to 6.1 - happy to have no annoying requester standing between me and my full screen experience.

Having reported this and other stuff to Apple a long time ago I was happy they finally managed to tweak one of their #1 products to sum level of USABILITY!

Me (happy) turning up the volume, dimming the lights, having the meal ready - ready and set for a nice movie night. Starting up, CMD-F - wow! Coming close to vlc-ease of use.

Leaning back (still happy), watching 10 minutes of fascinating story introduction, listening to a great music score... DOUH.

*JUST* listening to the music now. The screen went to sleep.

"WHAT THE...?!?!"

These (/&%(/&% STILL didnt switch off the energy saving modes automatically while wathcing full screen? ARE THEY EVER USING THEIR OWN PROGRAMS?

GRRRR?. Clicked twice, loaded System Prefs (the girl I told before about my great Macintosh now staring out of the window...), clicked energy saver, removed all the ****, knowing I had to think of setting it up by hand again later... double-GRRRR?.

CMD-F... relax...

...

five minutes later FLURRY pops up...

*imagine*

ok, I had a new installed osx, else I never have screen savers running but anyway. I was done with QT. And still vlc allows me to act on my second monitor WHILE watching a movie. And doesn't jump out of full screen mode when I click.

APPLE, READ THIS!

Can anyone else understand what the &*%^ this guy is talking about?

To summerise: When watching a full screen quicktime movie the screen to sleep because of Energy saving.

I'm sorry but if you don't want Energy Saving on - turn it off! Just because your doing something in an app doesn't mean the OS should stop doing what its been told to do.

So...turn of Energy Saving or write an Applescript to do it.

man, that's not what u really think? This App is delivered WITH the OS! Do you positively expect that a "watching movie experience" is always forcing you to hassle around with turning screen savers on and off? Naah, man.

Check windows - even there it is a standard.

I do WANT my screen go to sleep (when idle) 90% of the time I am using a mac. but not in full screen watching! Tell me the sense of that.

App or not App - this is what they should think about when doing a movie presenter.

As I mentioned before: see vlc.

why don't you just use vlc then?

You seem to have got so mad ("I Hate QT") about 1 little thing you think should be different.

Like I said before write an AppleScript to turn your screensaver and energy saving off before you watch something in Quicktime fullscreen...

Or If you don't like it use something else or go to windows.

Why don't you chill out

and obviously you're too lazy to switch the energy saver controls. it takes like 2 seconds of moving the pointer, geez.

oh people. this is a forum where even GUI flaws can be discussed. From a designer's point of view (in my opinion) this is a flaw.

If you are not willing to read my lines just drop out of this thread.

I AM using vlc but I'd have nothing against using QT Player, too. It does a good job - but this little thing (and till 6.1 there were many more) is still unsolved.

And this doesn't suit Apples way of looking at design.

That's it from me. have a good time. I go on watching Garp on VLC. :-)

Have you ever sent feedback to Apple about this? If not, I would suggest to do so.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

yeah, one or two times, a long time ago. I really wonder they still have this in. Must be easy to fix and they improved QT so well in between...

I'll do it again.

This is a flaw, and I find it annoying. What is Energy Saver supposed to do? It's supposed to put the computer to sleep when it is not being used. Just because you're not pushing keys or moving the mouse doesn't mean you aren't using the computer. Watching a movie is a good example.

I also hate it when I'm downloading something, and the computer goes to sleep. I'm on dialup, and once the HD spins down, I get disconnected. My download is stopped all because I forgot to jiggle the mouse after 10 min.

And disabling ES in System Prefs is really annoying. I don't know how many times I've turned it off because I wanted to download a big file, then forgot to turn it on, after finding out I left my computer fully on for a whole day while it was doing nothing.

The OS should be smart enough to know when to turn the screen and/or hard drive off. If you're watching a movie, obviously the computer shouldn't sleep at all. If you're downloading, the screen should go off, but the HD should stay active.

THANK YOU. Finally someone got my thought.

I told it to Apple again. maybe you just copy your reply above and also post it to them? It might help.

Malique, you gotta chill out. Sure, sounds like a flaw in the program, but all you can do is put in a report, change your energy savings settings, and continue on with life. Hope you had a beer with that meal...

maybe what I wrote sounded too strong? It was intended with some humor - like "nerving but not the middle of my life". Maybe it's my lack of english that everybody thinks I really go mad about this flaw... :-)

Forget your sorrows :-D

I don't know if you're exaggerating or not, but why are you setting your computer to sleep after 10 minutes? Computer displays don't tend to burn out anymore so there's no need to put your display to sleep for less than an hour. As for your computer, I never put my computer on auto sleep mode b/c I don't see the point. if you're big on saving $ you could use it, but for me, if I know I'm going to be away for a long time, then I'll put my computer to sleep or shutdown manually depending on the time i'm away. What I'm saying is that if you really care, you'll put your computer to sleep manually. The computer can't tell if you're sitting in front of it or now so it plays it safe and put things to sleep just in case. It's better than playing things forever (like an mp3 playlist set on repeat) and you coming back 2 weeks later after vacation and finding your computer still on.

For what it's worth, I completely agree. I've been caught by this behaviour a number of times, both while watching movies and while downloading big files overnight. It's really quite annoying when it happens to you so many times. And no, for some reason, I never remember to set the Energy Saver to off whenever I want to watch a movie or tv show on my comp.

Good call. It should be fixed.

It's a valid complaint - Apple's DVD player turns the energy saver settings off, no reason why QT shouldn't.

You may beable to get aorund it by setting a hot corner to disable the screen saver. not sure if that will work for enegy saver settings though.

I agree, this is a flaw that Apple should fix. When watching a DVD full-screen, this doesn't occur. I'd like the same behaviour in QuickTime Player.

You could always set up the 'hot corners' so that when you shove the pointer into a particular corner the, screen saver & the sleep mode don't activate.

Ok, fine, I think everyone here admits that it should be corrected, but it ain't exactly the biggest problem ever in my book. Takes a sec to change the energy saver prefs. Anyhow, feedback to Apple is the way to go but I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.

Hey go easy guys! He has a fair point! If DVD player went to sleep if you didn't reset energy saver, you would be pissed off - you wouldn't just say 'you're so lazy, it's only, like, 2 clicks'. This is the same thing. Give the guy a break. Just coz he's criticising your beloved Apple

Couldn't you just set one corner of the screen to keep the screensaver from coming on? Or would the machine still go to sleep?

Sure. But I agree with the initial poster. It is pure BS. Yea, its awork around *for now*, but it is indeed a bug and should be fixed. Apple has obviously acknowledged that this is something someone may want, as they have a specific setting in the Energy Saver CP for 'wathcing DVDs'. They need to automate this stuff much more, or, atleast give us the option to turn the automation on or off. When watching a full screen movie or any DVD, the system should know that it is in use and not put itself to sleep. This is obviouly not the desired action, regarless of how easy it is to turn it off.
