Ever since yesterday afternoon, my pismo's hard disk has been spinning and seeking nonstop, presumably due to massive swap activities! The amount of "free" PhysMem displayed by "top" starts at 209MB after Finder comes up, but quickly starts decreasing at 0.2MB per blink, until "free" PhysMem drops to only ~6MB (as shown below). I notice there's tons of pageins and pageouts, the latter seems to eat up my 4.3GB OS X partition (1.1GB free) until no space is left, but not before tormenting me with incessant disk-spinning noises. At first I thought it's "forty-two" that I newly installed, so I removed all traces of it. Then I stopped my QTSS. It seems to have helped a lot. Nonetheless, I still get tens of thousands of pageins and steadily increasing pageouts (972MB free at the moment, down from 1.1GB after a fresh restart). Matter of fact, Terminal and Chimera unexpected quit on me while I was typing this message the first time. What's wrong with my system?

Clearly, this is not your problem. Each page is 4kB. 5000 pageouts only amounts to 20MB. If you are losing a GB of disk space, you would have to have 250,000 pageouts in active use to use this much hard drive space. To verify this, check to see how many swapfiles are in /var/vm/. Each one is about 76MB.

You may want to look elsewhere on your system.

hint: you may want to check cache directories and possibly try a different version of chimera.
