I'm sure this way beaten to death many moons ago, but I only decided to fight the battle recently...
I've got several folders in my Dock that I'd like to visually distinguish from each other more readily.
Apple (in its wisdom.. not) seems to have locked the icon for the Documents folder (and others).
I'd like to make my Apps/Docs/etc icons look less alike, but cannot edit those icons thru the normal "Get Info" cut and paste.
Best I could think of was to make a Folder alias to the Docs folder.. change the icon on the alias, and put that in the dock (seems darned silly to go thru that effor tho).
Also (another Dock question), how can you keep the dock from "expanding" a gap in the folders section, when you are really trying to put something in to the folder (vs. adding something to the dock).. its like a bad game of catch-the-folder....
Thanks,
Mike

Press and hold the command key as you hover the file/folder over the dock.

Use Candybar to easily change the 'locked' icons without hassle, very cool app.

I appreciate the tip, but its not worth $12.95 to me just to change an icon... I already paid $129 for the OS...
any other ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

I found myself in the same boat.
Your other options are:
1. Do what CandyBar does (I imagine) yourself, by altering the system icons in /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemIcons.bundle --> package contents/Resources/SystemIcons.rsrc
You have to alter this file as root, as it's owned by the system. Find the Documents icon using an app like Iconographer and paste your new icon. Be careful to return the permissions to the original when you're done, or icons across the system won't appear.
You might want to check http://www.ResExcellence.com for more info.
2. Quick workaround: create an alias to Documents, paste your custom icon to the alias, and drag the alias to the dock.
Viola, you'll have a custom icon for Documents in the Dock. Only drawback: the little alias arrow will be attached.
