fsck Question

I just finished running fsck -y. It normally runs and ends with the message that the disk appears to be fine.

This time however, 'repairing volume' showed up, and after several minutes, it ended with the following message:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

I ran fsck -y again and I received the same repairing volume message, followed by the same ending message (that my file system was modified).

I know very little about Unix. Should I continue running fsck -y until I receive the disk appears to be fine ending message? In other words, does continually running fsck -y actually do any good?

Is anyone familiar with this? Is it a sign of a major crash coming on?

Any insight would be appreciated, thank you.

Yes, you should run it until it says things look okay.
If you run it, say, 20 times and it's still modifying things, then it's time to try something else. Start with DiskWarrior, if you have or can get it.

Well, I've run it at least 10 times and it continues say that it is making repairs and modifying things.

I am very interested in purchasing Disk Warrior, but everything I've read here in the forums indicate that a version compatible with OS X is due out this month. If it's really that close, I guess it would be worth waiting (and hoping my OS doesn't experience a fatal crash in the meantime).

Try running the disk utility and permissions utility on your OSX install disk.

I decided to go ahead and order Disk Warrior. For what it's worth. I spoke with a tech from Alsoft on the phone and she confirmed that an OS X version was coming out soon, but said that it would not be this month.
