If anyone is an ADC *paid* member, any chance of telling us what "seedings" are available for you. I'd really like to know because I'm considering signing up, but Apple isn't being very forthcoming regarding what is being made available to paid members (as opposed to free "online" members).

I realise there may be an NDA involved here, so perhaps this would be better via email:

henryATcirrusinternet.com (replace the AT with the @ symbol)

I'd appreciate the clues.

If you're considering it just to get access to pre-release software, I would highly recommend you save your $500. While the access to seeds is nice (with the benefit of better access to Radar, so at least you know they read your problem report before closing it as "behaves as expected"), the real value comes at your first renewal when you get nice discounts on any one system. And then there's the technical support aspect.

As for the specifics of what is seeded, that is covered under NDA, and I sincerely hope that nobody breaks that NDA. That being said, I'm almost positive that somebody will.

Bastards.

does that mean i can't tell you about the super-snappy debug-free build of 10.5 that we're all testing on our iphones?

Correct. But you can tell him about the netbooting G5 Palm with ShortBus™ technology.

Actually, ADC Online members (free) can have this access (which isn't particularly exciting) if they go to http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter and follow the instructions there.

As for what is seeded, I'm not entirely sure since I don't have an ADC account any more, but I was under the impression Apple doesn't give out things too freely. I'm not even sure if ADC members got the WWDC Jaguar seed from last year, I think you had to shell out another $1000 and actually attend the show for that.

If you're really interested, try and find someone with an ADC Select account and get them to transfer one of their Seed Keys to you.

I'm not gonna break my NDA here, but I can tell you that I wouldn't buy a membership simply to get the seeds or pre-release software. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about that aspect of the membership. You get tons of other perks, like access to developer info, seed keys, technical support indidents, monthly mailings containing software etc.
You can read up on all of the benefits on apple's website.

In other words, if you're a serious Mac developer, then the ADC account is definitely worth $500. If Mac programming is just a hobby for you, then it might be worth the $500. If you're just a Mac fanboy, who wants to put the latest warez on Hotline, then don't bother.

It is true that Apple's policy of keeping people in the dark as to its plans hurts far more than it helps. However, $500 just to get access to pre-release seeds? That's a little excessive.

If you're really that desperate for seeds, sign yourself up for a credit's worth of classes at the local community college and then go for ADC Student. You don't get as many seeds, but it still ends up cheaper than other ADC levels, plus you'll qualify for student discounts (Apple's student discounts on hardware totally suck, but they give awesome discounts on software). Plus, you might actually learn something

i was a student ADC member up until this past January. a student ADC membership doesn't get you any seeds. what it does get you is 1 hardware discount that saves you something around 20% on any new mac. in Oct. i bought a 17' iMac with Applcare for around $1850. completey worth the $100 investement in ADC. another cool perk is you get free OS updates. Jaguar was free.

Same here, the hardware discounts are definetly worth the $100, and even the copies of OS updates pay for the membership. We got Jaguar for free and this month we are being sent a copy of the 10.2.3 cds also.

Actually it is "paid", otherwise you would still be "paying" right now. My grammar is correct, thanks for point it out (but then I speak and write British English).

Thanks for the info everyone. It's been helpful - I qualify for student status as I'm finishing off my degree I started years ago, but I'm not sure the student discount is any more (in the UK at least) than the student discount offered through the Education Store.

I am a student ADC member, recently asked about a PowerBook 12" with discount at the online AppleStore of Spain and I am getting 20% off.

It is a really great discount, needless to say I am getting that little beast

i'm a ADC student developer with an account, and i'm curious about the hardware discount... i've read on their site that if you have an ADC hardware discount, it'll show up under your assetts page at http://connect.apple.com, but mine isn't showing anything. how did you guys get your hardware discounts with a student ADC account?

tia,

The discount is there even though it isn't shown in the assets page. It will show up, however, as a "Used Asset" after you buy a machine at the ADC Store.
