This is kind of a wierd question. Here is the story...Suppose I have an application window minimized into dock. Now, I would like to open a new window in the same application without having to pull out the window that is already minimized. Any ideas how this is done in OS X?

Only way I do this now is to let the minimized window show up, and then use Apple-N to open the new one. I want a way that doesn't pull out the minimized window.

'Command-tab' through open apps until you reach the one you want. Let go of the keys. Your app will be brought to the front but your minimised windows will stay where they are. From there, just 'Command-N' for a new window.

In my opinion, this is becomming a problem in OSX. Each time I switch to an application, it often creates a new window or pulls out a minimized one. I understand why they would do that, but I don't like an OS thinking for me. What if I just wanted to open a new file?

Lets say I'm working in Photoshop and I have 5 documents minimized. If I click on it's icon to go back to photoshop, it expands the last minimized window. If that's not what I want, I have to reminimize and expand the right one. Granted it's not the end of the world but it gets on my nerve after a couple of times.

Actually, you can just right(or control)-click the app's icon in the dock and select which document you would like to work with.

I see the problem being that each app can define different behaviour, so you don't know how a particular app will respond. I think there should be a syspref that will override app prefs and let you apply a global behaviour.

This is what I've tried to get myself to do but I guess I still have old habits from OS9, shame on me. Indeed a system pref would be totally awesome but could it work? I wonder if there's an API for it. Hey! Maybe an unsanity .ape haxie could fix it?

If you're used to OS 9, you could always install ASM and then use the Application menu. That won't trigger the Dock behavior, and you can't get much more OS 9-like than that.
