and if so, does anyone know where I can find that little "music player" app they bundled with it? obviously iTunes does the job 10 times better (and they may be the same app), but it looks pretty nifty in its simplicity... at least from the old screenshots I've seen...

and second question of course is if anyone knows where i might be able to find it.

thank you.

I have the public beta CD but I can't find the app on the CD.

It must be hidden in there somewhere, sorry.

Yeah. Why the hell can't our brushed metal be like that? Seems much more fitting to the Aqua theme than this [edit: dark] gray crap.

I've heard that it wouldn't play in current versions of OS X, so you're out of luck in that regard.

as for the Public Beta--yeah, I remmber those heady days. I still have an unopened copy in its plastic shrinkwrap.

It was pretty average from memory... Anyway after a lot of mucking around (learning pax and stuff) I managed to extract it from my Public Beta CD. The bad news is, it doesn't run. It bounces in the dock a few times and then disappears (without an unexpectedly quit message). About the only program that would run from the Public Beta Applications folder was PDFCompositor. Remember that one? Anyway if you still want Music Player I disk imaged (1.2Mb) it and can e-mail it to you if you give me your address.

Did the public beta even have Classic? I can't remember.

Somone could hack out the GUI of the Mp3 player and make a Audion skin or something?

I believe it did, running OS 9.04. Then when PB #2 (10.0) came out, it ran 9.1 in classic. When OS X final (10.1) came out, I believe that ran classic 9.2 on it. Could be wrong though.

Don't waste your time- the app won't even open it requires outdated versions of the audio frameworks.

That was done a long time ago.

Panic used to have it on their Faces page, but I think Apple made them take it down. However, it's been done, and so it can be done again.

Yeah, you could run Classic in the Public Beta. I remember you couldn't copy and paste between the two environments though.

To be honest, you get 90% of the pleasure of that Music Player app through looking at the screenshot....

FWIW, the reason MusicPlayer fails to launch is that no 'cfrg' resource exists in Music Player.app/Contents/Resources/Music Player.rsrc

If you add a suitable 'cfrg' and 'carb' resources it will indeed launch. The 'cfrg' just needs to be a basic one since there is only one PEF container in the data fork. Only one member, all the defaults should be fine. ResEdit can do this.

However, since there have been framework changes since Public Beta, there are undefined symbols on startup. They could perhaps be marked weak but you need a PEF editor to do that and PEFViewer is just that: a Viewer. You can't edit anything with it. But regardless, the app actually launches.

2003-02-05 17:09:09.701 Music Player[25963] CFLog (21): Error loading : error code 7, error number 0 (dyld: /Users/dan/Desktop/Music Player copy.app/Contents/MacOS/Music Player Undefined symbols:
_CGSScaleCTM
_ClipCGSContextToPortShape
)

However, when you try to do _anything_, it always bombs with errors. Probably something to do with PowerPlant way back when PowerPlant sucked for X.

If you go Source->Audio Source->Other... you get some wierd results.

First, a white box appears where the controller would be. Next, you do get a dialog that presumably would list sources, but has nothing in it. You can click "Choose..." to pick more sources but I have yet to find anythign that will work.

So, because the controller window doesn't show up and doesn't draw right, I would suspect the WDEFDrawBundle.bundle might have something to do with all of this (its in Music Player.app's Resources folder). Either that or simply modified OS X framework code/symbols.

If I had that skin for Audio, I'd use it in a heartbeat. I have never found a skin I have actually liked. Anyone that find it gets a hero cookie from me.

While we are being all nostalgic, anyone got some old school PB1 screen shots we can gawk/boo at?

This thread is making me want to break out my DP2/3/4 CD's and install them on my iMac that's in the corner...

My favorite thing was the original Dock. BOY did that thing suck...

Makes me wonder what OS X icons would have looked like if the "BOX" idea was what the dock used...

Of course, it was something else to see the pre-alpha of Rhapsody. Boy was that nutty.

We had an Apple employee showing it to us at an event at the time. Ahh, those were the days.

Here's an old easter egg from DP3:

I think the coolest from DP3 was that Classic had a ClassicX appearance selection in the Appearance Control Panel

Another gratuitous DP3 dock shot... No open app arrows, there was a colored line or a white line...

The Good ol Finder window with the big rounded square buttons...

And the coolest, you could actually remove Aqua by mucking in the HIToolbox and Extras.rsrc and actually REMOVING references to Aqua elements.

I just saw the movie 'One Hour Photo' with Robin Williams. Mr. Yorkin has a G4 Cube with a new-style LCD Apple Studio Display. Look closely. He's running OSX, with the Apple in the center of the menubar, and no Apple menu. As per the beta and pre-beta days.

Man Cipher, normally you post quite reasonable stuff, but this is just bullshït.

It wasn't a joke, it was the beginning of the OS we use today. It was the foundation. Needless to say that it incorporated more features and greater stability than many other OS that had more time to evolve.

If you think it's a joke because you couldn't use it for everyday work then I conclude that you can't read. It was public beta... beta as in "for testing purposes".

Jee wiz.

Wesley,

This means that the app doesn't have the 'cfrg' and 'carb' resources in its resource file. See my post above with the backtrace about why this error occurs.

I'd really love to get a complete set of screenshots (uncompressed please) from the DP and the PB. Does anyone have these dinasaurs still installed?

If I had the discs, I would do it, but I didn't switch until 10.0 was released.

If anyone wants to donate them to me, I will gladly

I've got a G4 1.25 Ghz with a partitioned drive, and I've got the public beta CD. Would the pb work on hardware this recent? I'd like to play around with it just to get a sense of how far OS X has come. Anybody know if it would run?

If you're going to install the PB, be sure to disconnect from your network. During bootup, it'll check the date and time. If you're connected to the web, you'll be told that the beta has expired. You don't get this message until you've gone though the process of installing it.

Nah, it won't install. I tried to install Mac OS X 10.0 on a G4 800 MHz Tower and it didn't work, and when trying to get the public beta on a G4 733 MHz Tower I got a kernal panic.
