Does anyone else have problems switching between applications and working in the window but have the application in the background?

For example, I'll be typing in a window I switch to for a while and then hit a command key, only to have it work in the application I was last in (instead of the one I'm working in). This can be very confusing and I don't really see the reason you'd want to work in one app and do things like print in another app. I'm wondering if this is a feature I can't figure out how to use or if it's a bug. Thoughts?

It's a bug, although not one that I have experienced with any regularity. When you switch windows, the application that created the frontmost window is supposed to become active.

That's very interesting. It happens to me fairly often. i don't guess there's a good method to report this to Apple. Hmm.

I've never seen/heard of this problem before.
Does it happen on both your Powerbook and Powermac? What version of OSX?
As a guess: If you have your Powerbook's trackpad set to "click" when tapped, maybe you're accidentally clicking into another app's window and not realizing it?
I dunno... when it happens, check the top left of the menu bar and see if the app it lists as being active is really the one you want to be working in.

It happens on both of my machines (10.2.3). Last example, an installer was running and I clicked on it and could work in it, but another app. is located in the menu bar.

I'll try to document the incidents.
