Okay. It seems the success or failure of USB Printer Sharing is a rather hit-or-miss kind of thing.

If you use USB Printer Sharing, whether it works or not, I'd greatly appreciate if you could respond to the above poll.

Thanks in advance.

Some of that looks a little redundant, but it works in my mind. Just check what's applicable to you.

To start:

My (would be) print server is also my router. I'm not using the built in Internet sharing, nor Brickhouse, but just a simple script. My system lives in two subnets. The external subnet is recognised by System Preferences -> Network, and I believe if I had a nother system on that subnet, it would work... We'll see.

I filled in the poll, but it might be more meaningful to actually describe my setup.

I have:

ADSL Modem -> Router

Laptop <- Old Tower <- Router -> New Tower -> Printer

The Old Tower runs Internet Sharing to allow the Laptop to connect to it via airport; through NAT, the Laptop can also connect to the Old Tower and the Internet. The Router assigns the Old Tower and New Tower info via DHCP; I configured the Laptop myself. The Laptop/Old Tower Airport network is on the 255.255.0.0 subnet, while the 'main' network run by the Router is on the 255.255.255.0 subnet. The Old Tower discovers both the New Tower and the Laptop via Rendezvous; each of the others can only see the Old Tower, which is what I'd expect with their subnets. Also as I would have expected, the Old Tower can use USB Printer Sharing just fine if the New Tower is turned on, but to print from the Laptop I have to specify IP addresses manually. All machines are running OS X, and the New Tower is connected to the printer via USB only.

In short, I don't have a particularly standard setup, but everything works as I'd expect.

As described in this thread I started, I use Internet sharing with Brickhouse and printer sharing works fine, except sometimes I need to turn it off and on when my printer for some reason becomes invisible to the network.

Here's my setup :

Desktop G4 connected via Ethernet to ADSL.
IP in the Airport tab set to 10.0.1.1
Subnet : 255.255.255.0

On the iBook and TiBook : IP set respectively to 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.1.3 and router IP to 10.0.1.1

I use print sharing with an Epson 870 on my dual 867 and access it with my cube and iMac without a problem.
A problem occurs when I try to print and the dual is sleeping. A second printer will sometimes appear in Print Center and documents will spool to it, and of course never print. I have to delete the printer and wake the dualie up and print again, then it works. All of these connect via my router/switch using DHCP on the same subnet of course.

I'm unsure as to where my situation fits with the poll. I have an iMac DV/SE 400 running 9.1, sharing my DSL remotely with my eMac via a snow airport. Both have airport cards installed. My eMac 800 runs 10.2.3 and is connected to my USB printer. When the eMac runs 9.2, USB print sharing works perfectly with the iMac downstairs. When I run 10.2.3 however, the printer does not show up in the iMac's USB print sharing control panel.

The HP deskjet does work with 10.2.3, just not the print sharing. Is this a Jaguar thing? Would it work if I upgraded the iMac OS from 9.1 to 9.2? I don't want to run jaguar on the iMac, as it runs at a barely acceptable speed (IMO) on the more muscular eMac.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Presently, when I (or more usually, my wife) needs to use print sharing we restart the eMac into 9.2, the printer reappears on the USB printer control panel, and everyone is (almost) happy. Now if only I could get it to work when the eMac is running 10.2.3 ....

Mac OS X printer sharing and Mac OS 9 USB printer sharing are completely different and incompatible systems. There is no way this set up could possibly work.

Your only hope is to find a Mac OS 9 version of CUPS, and install it on the imac. I don't know whether this is available (since CUPS is based on unix protocols) but someone may have ported it, because it is open source.

My USB print sharing works fine (mostly). I have a Linksys router/hub for the internet sharing.
I have found 2 major problems with the print sharing ,all to do with the Mac connected directly to the printer.
1. If someone on the Mac (with the printer) has Classic running & has printed from a Classic app. The USB printer then becomes owned by that system, it becomes unavailable to other computers on the network, even though they can still see it.
2. If the Computer with the printer goes to sleep, the printer will disapear from the network, with no way of remotely waking it up.
I had loads of greaf with the printer sharing, I then removed the HP drivers from the 'remote' Mac and it now works (other than with the above 2 bugs).

Thanks very much for confirming my suspicions Barney. Any more info on CUPS? I'll try searching. Thanks again.

Okay, subnets changed, no joy.

I'll keep working on it, though.

G4 iMac Router and Modem in my room, PC and Snow iMac up stairs, Consols in living room.

No internet shareing on, and it works. I could even get the PC to print on it if I wanted too.

I will be adding a 12 inch PB too that too soon.

p.s. and yes, I have a Gamecube too.
