My system is giving me an excessive startup delay on the grey apple screen.

System G4-400, 1.5 G RAM, Airport, ATI 8500 MAC Edition, OS X 10.2.3.

Here is the Error:
Feb 07 10:44:22 mach_init[2]: Started with uid=0
USBF: 35.744 ----> long Apple string
USBF: 41.744 ----> long Apple string
(ipc/send) invalid destination port : initCGDisplayState: can not map display interlocks.
kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection can not connect to server.
INIT_Processes(), could not establish the default connection to the WindowServer ./etc/rc.boot: Line 1: 11 Abort trap open
/etc/rc.boot: list: command not found
/etc/rc.boot: close: command not found
/etc/rc.boot: quit: command not found

NOTE: rc.boot does exist on the boot volume under ./private/etc/rc.boot and is an 8K file.

Parts of this error contribute to wait states throughout the boot process.

QUESTION: How do I fix this to reduce my startup delay?

Thanks!

Tried fixing file permissions with Disk Utility? Maybe they aren't set as executable or something.

Edit: just checked, they're not set as executable on mine and I don't have any startup delays. They're also about 4K each.

/etc/rc.boot may exist but what in the world is in it? I couldn't find any uncommented references to "close" in /etc and no uncommented references to "quit" other than:

/etc/magic:>>116 belong =3 (quit)
/etc/rc:stty quit undef
/etc/rc.boot:stty quit undef
/etc/rc.netboot:stty quit undef

The stty commands refer to a signal, so that can't be your problem. Nor are there any references to these in /System/Library/StartupItems. I used the following command to search:

grep -r '\(close\)\|\(quit\)' /etc 2> /dev/null
grep -r '\(close\)\|\(quit\)' /System/Library/StartupItems 2> /dev/null

Can you figure out where in your startup process these "commands" appear?

If I go into single-user mode, I will get this specific error before the single-user boot process is complete.

PS: I have also gone in and ran Disk Utility to repair persmissions --- no difference.

I edited my first post to show where the error occurs in the startup process (using the single-suer start-up mode so that I could write down the error).

The error first occurs after the mach_init[2] component. There are two USBF lines that give a long Apple string (with no apparent error), then the error occurs just prior to completing the single-user boot process.

The error seems to be with something that is telling the boot to "initCGDisplayState". That command fails then you get the error with the INIT_Processes() where it can't connect to the WindowServer.

The thing is, that although it spends about a minute on the grey apple screen, the rest of the boot process runs through everything without any apparent delays and once booted, the system seems to be running fine (I haven't noticed any operational problems at all). Whatever this thing is, it is causing error during the non-GUI boot process.

Wow! I can't believe that this actually stumped everyone. Isn't there anybody that can even guide me where to look for this error?
