I just downloaded the new Virex, and it popped up a new page in my web browser. It's like spam - I just opened up the .pkg file, and it popped up a new website, Virex's website! What's the deal with that?

Actually, an oxymoron is two words that are contradicting. Pretty Ugly, a little tall, etc.

So, for Virex to be an oxymoron, you need to add a word, like say- Virex Rocks, or Virex Works. That's an oxymoron.

Seriously.

1. Don't be stupid and you won't get a virus.
2. Viruses on MacOSX? Less likely than on 9, just don't go around authenticating applications.

There's a reason they only give vertix to .mac users... they're the only ones who were stupid enough to pay for .mac... hence they're the ones most likelyi to accept a virus

Remember, even though there are currently no known viruses for OSX -and the only reason this is the case is that no one cas cared enough to write one yet- you can carry viruses designed for other platforms. This is where tools like Virex come in handy: to root out those at the source.

Shame Virex is such a joke. While the latest version has one improvement -it can actually download its own definitions- it has a long way to go before it'll have caught up to the features of Virex 2.0 back in the old MacOS days. Heck; it's still not quite on par with Disinfectant, the old but dependable anti-virus freeware by the venerable John Norstad.

Sadly, this hasn't been updated for many years either; a real shame since it had the Best. About Box. EVER.

Ultimately the problem with making a Mac virus is... how do you get it to transfer? Unless you have an x86 compiled one and a PPC compiled one in the same transfer it's not likely to be very effective.
Not to mention... you'd need a PPC to compile it... and what Mac user wants to screw over other mac users?

Now, now mr. superchicken. I might have been duped into buying .mac but I wasn't silly enough to install virex.

Actually I like .mac. iSync, JeepSafari, iDisk web page, webmail, etc.

nah I joke cause I love
.mac has some cool stuff.. the only thing I ever used iTools for though was the @mac.com e-mail addy. That was pretty sweet... I was thewaitingsalt@mac.com... normally my SN is salty... it's based on a verse from Mathew Chapter 5.
Anyway, yeah... I run a website... www.clayshaker.com so I get all the e-mail addys I could want, and I get 200 megs of storage... acctually upping that to 1GB with a special deal I'm drueling over, I get data storage, and yeah... for me there's very little benifit to having .mac... and for that price you could set up your own domain name and stuff so I don't see the point in doing it aside from an ease of use point of veiw.

The main thing that I like about what people can do with.mac is the whole iPhoto album thing online and publishing their iCals... Personally I wish apple would make a way to export the html... but ultimately I know why they wouldn't... and I can always just set up my own setup anyway... but if you're not the type to dable in html and design your own graphics and host a site etc then it's useful... but yeah... I dono... honestly I think .mac's a rip off but hey if you want it pay... if not... uhh... be like me and do the same stuff for cheaper and do more

Cool. I figured you liked .mac.

Don't mind seeing anyone beat up on virex. Who needs it anyway?

Right, I realize my usage of the term oxymoron was bad. Sorry to all English majors out there

I decided to not install it once that happened... but I do think virus protection is important, if someone can make a good protection application. My Mac OS X goes into the spinning beachball quite often when I'm on the network and still have a drive loaded that isn't on the network anymore... but sometimes stranger things happen, and I just hope it isn't a virus. I don't think it is, of course, but you never know. Yesterday, between opening a simple Finder window on my hard drive, closing it, and trying to restart, it literally took me about 15 minutes, the longest restart I've ever seen. Weird weird weird.

I only installed Virex because I paid for .Mac, and I wanna get everything out of it. I've yet to fully scan my computer for virues using it (occasionally I use Norton), but just having it installed makes me feel better.
