I like my hard drive icon in the upper left corner, but often when the computer wakes up or I open a program, the screen will go blue for a second, then come back to my desktop, but with the hard drive icon now halfway down the screen (always in the same place).

It's almost like moving the hard drive icon freaks OSX out... any ideas why? Can I "save" my desktop state so that it "wants" to put my icon where I want it too? Most curious...

Finder, View, Show View Options, check snap to grid.

SwitchRes X has the option to save your desktop icon locations and then restore it. I haven't tried it myself though. I use the program for it's resolution switching features.

I have 'snap to grid' enabled but I see the same behaviour on my computer. I like to have my (few) icons towards the bottom right corner of my screen, but the HD icon always migrates northward and ends up at its customary spot under the system clock. Odd.
