I am kind of new at all this. I am a switcher. How do I uninstall an application?

It's usually as simple as dragging it to the trash, assuming your user has permissions enabled for it.

Usually (unless it's Virex) just trash the app. Most apps created a preferences file in <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences in the format com.company.appname.plist. You may trash that, though you don't really need to.
Sometimes application store stuff they need (plugins, caches etc.) in <yourhomefolder>/Library/Application Support/ or ~/Library/Caches/ so you can look there for remains (once a year or so when you feel like doing spring cleaning).

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Some programs that use an installer can also uninstall the program by running the installer and choosing the uninstall option. Most programs in OS X come as a "bundle", meaning everything is in one package that you just put somewhere you like on your hard disk and that's all. They make it really simple to uninstall too because dragging it to the trash (like other have mentioned) removes all of it's files (almost, but the ones that remain are fine to have staying around.) Most OS 9 applications can be uninstalled by dragging their folder (if any) to the trash as well.
BTW, I'm glad you've seen the light. Have fun with your Macintosh!

If you installed it by drag and drop, you delete it by drag and drop (to the Trash). That simple.
If it's a stupid program that you had to click on an installer to install, then you might have to run the installer again to uninstall it. The only app I can think of at the moment where this is the case is Norton. With Apple's apps and with most others, this isn't the case - you can just trash them.

Search for the app's name using the Find tool. Drag everything that comes up the Trash. There ya go. That won't work with some apps, i.e. Norton.
