Excessive boot delays on grey screen

I tried starting a thread on the Unix section, but didn't get a whole lot of response, so I thought I'd try it again here.

System G4-400, 1.5 G RAM, Airport, ATI 8500 MAC Edition, OS X 10.2.3.

My system is giving me an excessive startup delay on the grey apple screen. If I single-user boot to watch the start sequence, I get the following error before getting to the command prompt:

Error:
(ipc/send) invalid destination port : initCGDisplayState: can not map display interlocks.
kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection can not connect to server.
INIT_Processes(), could not establish the default connection to the WindowServer ./etc/rc.boot: Line 1: 11 Abort trap open
/etc/rc.boot: list: command not found
/etc/rc.boot: close: command not found
/etc/rc.boot: quit: command not found

NOTE: rc.boot does exist on the boot volume under /private/etc/rc.boot and is an 8K file.

Parts of this error contribute to wait states throughout the boot process. I've already tried repairing permissions and it made no difference.

QUESTION: How do I fix this error to reduce my startup delay?

Thanks!

How many hard drives do you have installed? Do you have a third party ATA/IDE or SCSI card installed?

Here,
download this file,

http://members.lycos.co.uk/kbotc/rc.boot.sit

Expand and put rc.boot on your desktop

then open up Terminal, (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal[.app])

put this in

Code:
sudo mv /etc/rc.boot ~/ sudo mv ~/Desktop/rc.boot /etc/rc.boot
If that first on returns an error, then you now know what your problem was, if not, maybe yours was just corrupted. know how to reverse those two commands from Single-User incase something goes wrong.

Reformatting ??? You've got to be kidding. Not my first choice. I'm sure that SOMEONE out there can decipher this error message and tell me something that can fix this (probably something in a plist file or other fix).

Once again, I ask you, do you have multiple hard drives? I get this same error. It appears I get the error because OS X looks on the primary drive of its internal ATA/66 bus first. My boot drive is on a PCI ATA/133 controller. When I move this drive to the internal ATA/66 bus, I do not get the error and I get a quick startup. Moving the drive back to the ATA/133 controller gives me the error and an incredibly long gray screen.
