Install Fink and Fink Commander.

Then come back for specifics. By then there should be some responses from those who can explain it better than I.

BTW, KDE takes a long time to compile, so don't panic. It took over six hours on my machine.

okay done that, now i want to install gnome to run under x11 what do i do now?

For gnome type the following at the shell.

sudo fink install gnome-core

To list other stuff you can install, type

fink list gnome

To install kde type

sudo fink install bundle-kde

To run KDE modify your .xinitrc to have the following at the end:

exec startkde&

To run Gnome modify your .xinitrc to have the following at the end

exec gnome-session&

Note that you can run KDE or Gnome apps without their "environments" under aqua-wm that is the default (now) for X11. You'll have to find the path to each application yourself though. (Not hard - they are in /sw/bin)
