Under 10.1 the only time I ever had to restart was if I did something stupid, like put in a dodgy CD or something. Since upgrading to 10.2 about a month ago I've had to restart about 6 times, all because running on battery seems to confuse the OS!

Most of the restarts have been because the system wakes up fine in a lecture, but the vol/brightness keys won't work, and then if/when it goes to sleep it locks up. Today I openened up my iBook and the mouse/keyboard did nothing - the OS seemed fine in that the battery moniter was still updating and it still went to sleep/woke up no problem. Very embarrasing to have to use paper and pen!

I've reset the power manager and the PRAM. This didn't happe under 10.1. It must be 10.2! Help!

I had the same thing on my ibook 500/DVD.
In energy saver, don't set "reduce power" when on battery mode.

Hmmm... I'll try this. Thanks for the tip, I hope it works!

Have problems if I disconnect and connect the power adapter while in sleepmode. Perhaps I should also check out your suggestion. I know I had a few issues when reduced power mode was first introduced, in os x.
It was in 10.1.4 maybe..?
Hmm..

it's a good idea to check for/repair drive errors and repair permissions if you're having any kind of trouble.

A lot of people have this problem with their iBook/PowerBook. I have the no-sound-after-sleep issue too on my PowerBook.

2 things:

My first Jaguar installation was an upgrade over my 10.1 system. It had problems.

Then I backed up my data, did a clean install of 10.2, restored my data, and everything was fine.

If you don't want to do it this way, at least go back and do an archive and install...

Finally, make sure you update to 10.2.3. It fixed the keyboard problem after waking from sleep. I still find that my sound is often muted after waking. I haven't figure this one out yet.

This is often because the sound sub-system goes to sleep and doesn't get woken back up properly.

The surest fix is to just hit the sound up key once after waking and all should be well from then on.

Alternativley there's some little program on Versiontracker that makes a "silent beep" every few minutes and thereby keeps the sound system from going to sleep.

I know the sound hardware is powered down to help conserve power, but it seems that something different is going on here. I don't just mean that there is no sound. I mean the mute checkbox in System Preferences is actually checked--and I didn't do it.
