I just installed the new version of X11 on two computers. Works great on one. On the other, all of the windows open under the menu bar so I can't move them. I installed it over the old version which was working fine. Any help?

thanks,
kman

Because Apple didn't learn from System 7 that making windows that could only be dragged by their menu bar causes problems.

Reinstall X11 and select custom install and be sure to choose the checkbox that defaults it's preferences.

This will also give you back it's Aqua appearance.

i don't see a checkbox to default its prefs. All I see is "X11 config" and two others that cannot be modified.

check that one and reinstall.

I had the same problem, but reinstalling with the unchecked option checked fixed it.

I think it's more likely that quartz-wm isn't running for some reason.

If theres no window manager running and a window starts in the top left of the screen it will look like it's under the menu bar - but it really doesn't have one at all.

The absence of a window manager also makes dragging windows around rather hard, as that's a function the wm handles.

Overwriting your x11 confg should work though. you might want to make sure that you don't have an .xinitrc file in your home dir. (you'll need to use terminal)

I had the same problem. For one reason or another, the Installer.app didn't replace the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file. I went and installed that one file out of the Apple X11 package with Pacifist and all is well, although an alternative way to solve the problem would be to edit that file and replace "twm" with "quartz-wm".

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

That's the issue. If you have your own .xinitrc, you can put the "quartz-wm" line in there as well, replacing whatever window manager you had before.

Well, I reintalled twice with that box checked to no avail. I eventually deleted the preferences file and then started it up. It asked if I wanted to create a new one and worked fine. Thanks for all of your responses.

There is meanwhile v0.21 which installs always the /etc/X11 with appropriate contents and backs up an existing one.
There are no other changes made, so if your system runs fine there's no reason to install it.
