Okay, I really should know the answer to this. At least I did under OS 9.

Two questions but first some background.

Have a G4 Cube and PowerBook Ti, both with airport cards. Have Airport base station connected via Ethernet to cable modem.

1. I am having a world of trouble trying to get either of these Mac's to see each other over the Airport network. When I create a network on one, I can select it under the Airport menu of the other computer, but I can't see anything in the Networks or connect to the other one. Am I doing something wrong?

2. Should I get the first bit going, is it possible to leave one connected to the internet while the other is connected to the first. In other words, I want to do some file transfers across them but at the same time browse the internet on one.

Appreciate any assistance on either or both of these problems. (I have looked through the archives here but haven't been able to find the answers. Perhaps not using the right key words.)

Thanks in advance,

Jordan

In system preferences select personal file sharing on both computers. In the finder, select Go > Connect to server. Select which computer you want to log into. It will ask you for a username and password. After that the other computer's drive should mount.

Cool note, a different user can be using one computer and you can log into that computer and manipulate files for a completely different user. (ie If I'm on my desktop machine, my wife can log into the desktop using my powerbook to retrieve her own files)

You're trying to create a computer to computer network to share the internet. It doesn't work like that. Both computers are equal clients to the base station. They should both be set up for DHCP in Sys Prefs > Network. The base station shares the internet connection wit both machines simultaneously. The above poster describes how to connect to the other computer. These things can all be done at once. You're over-thinking it. You don't need to change anything to go from internet to file sharing. It's all the same.

You can also log in as yourself, again, from a remote computer. In other words, if you are logged onto your Cube in another room, you can log in again from your TiBook as the same user/password. This means you don't have to add additional users just to share files with yourself.

Yes, that's what I meant. I can log in as myself to a remote computer while my wife is using it as seperate user and manipulate files.

Actually I just networked my house after getting a new PB and I synchronize my files between the PB and the desktop with no permission issues. This includes my iTunes and iPhoto libraries. It's quite cool actually.

Well, yeah, but she is (probably) logged in as her user. What I was saying is that in addition to doing this, you can log in remotely to a computer even if that user is already logged in locally. The same user logged in twice. This really isn't anything big, I just wanted to clarify to the original poster, who seemed a little confused.

Thanks Guys.

As usual, it was simpler than I thought!!!

Was trying to set up networks etc....

Got both computers drives mounted on each other and can browse the internet now while file transfers are going in the background.

Cool!!!

Cheers,

Jordan

And best of all you can sit in the smallest
room in your house with the PB on your lap
and surf the net!
