Hello.

I am having major problems installing the latest software update on my iBook. I attempted to install from Software Update and it crashed. I attempted again was told that I needed to download the update to my desktop. I did that and attempted to install manually and the installer crashed while trying to install it was at the "Locating software to update.." I have searched and cannot seem to find a fix. Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Check your "Receipts" folder and delete the 10.2.4 package file if it exists...

Then, re-start and try the update that is on your desktop again.

Just a hunch.

gorickey,

Thanks for your help. That is one of the first things I thought of and there is no 10.2.4 file in receipts.

Anyone with any other ideas?

Matt

Damn, I take it you've tried downloading the file once again? Maybe a corrupt image?

Yeah. I have actually downloaded it a few times, just in case. I have run Disk Utility, I ran fsck, I redid software update and that downloaded fine but crashed in the install phase.

have you perhaps moved some of the components that it is trying to update from the default location?

No, everything is running from the default places. I haven't moved anything.

perhaps you have some better luck if you try downloading the 10.2.4 combo updater and running the install from that?

I thought this would do the trick but still no luck. I have no idea what else could work. It may be time for a reformat?? I don't want to have to do that though.

reformat is kinda drastic...if you are going to reinstall you'd be better to use the "clean install" option for 10.2 then run the 102.4 combo update. but i still think there is another easier solution and it's probably staring me right in the face but i can't see it right now.

last thought for now - have you tried launching apple's disk utility and using the fix permissions util? perhaps there's a wonky permission thing thats not letting you update some components??? (grasping at straws right now...getting late....)

Mr. Blur,

Yeah I tried that, it was on of the first few things I did. I am feeling the same way your are. I am going to hit the bed and sleep on it. Maybe I will dream the solution. I did check on one thing before hitting the sack and noticed that for some reason I didn't have a Classic prefpane. I have no idehy this is, I was just going throught checking any of the things that are supposed to be updated. Fixing this did not help either.

Thanks for all of your help.

Do you have DiskWarrior? You may have some serious directory issues...

Software update crashed on me too while it was installing the update. Couldn't do anything. Finally I just erased my drive and did a clean install. Lucky I backed up a couple weeks ago. Didn't loose to much. Think God I backed up iTunes.

Anyway, after the clean install, the updater worked fine.

I'm not one to mess with my system and the only thing big I've done is a processor upgrade just yesterday. Powerlogix dual 1.2.

Can you go to the Console.app, and in Preferences, turn on both Crash logging options (the second tab). Then, post the crashlog of both software update and the installer here.

Thanks,
Dan

I tried that early on and it did it's thing but did not help. I did have problems getting DiskWarrior to run the first time and ended up having to put my iBook in Firewire disk mode and run DiskWarrior on another computer.

My installer crashed too. Second time that this has happened. Last time I was installing iMovie 3 and iPhoto 2. Couldn't get OS X to do anything. Finally, CharlesS helped me by telling me to update my prebindings in single user mode. It worked, but it still said that it couldn't update like 30% of the prebindings (not sure if this is a problem).

Now it crashed during the 10.2.4 update. Haven't even tried restarting yet for fear that my computer is - once again - unusable. I would really like to know why my Software Update fails to work on my system (and others' systems, it appears).

I'll update everyone when I get a chance to restart my system.

It appears that this updater is very sensitive to corrupted (or otherwise problematic) preference files. I had all the same problems with the installer (through software update, standalone and standalon combo) quitting at the checking state. I looked at my console log and saw reference to some difficult with plist files with the heading:

CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:

I don't remember the exact wording of the next line (don't have that log anymore) but in my case it pointed to some skin plist files for Whamb, an audio player that I downloaded once and trashed but it left files in the Application Support folder. When I trashed the "Whamb" folder my updater ran just fine.

So, I would suggest looking in the console log after the installer quits(not crash log) and seeing if there are any references to a plist parse failing. If so, try trashing that (those) plist file(s) and see if update runs.

chemprofjoe,

That was exactly the problem. My console log said:
2003-02-14 13:53:19.632 Locum[669] CFLog (0):
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
Contents/Info.plist -- /Users/mattpark/Documents/Skins/SkinTest.app/
The parser will retry as in 10.1, but the problem should be corrected in the plist

I attempted to delete the bad file but whenever I tried to view the contents of the Skins folder it would crash the Finder. I could not delete it by putting it in the Trash so I used the terminal to delete the directory. After I did that the installer ran great.

Thanks for everyone's help and ideas. It turned out to be a corrupt skin file.

Matt
