The Finder has had this bug for a long time and it was not fixed with 10.2.4.
Basically open a new finder window and switch to column view. Then navigate to any folder that has other items in it (let's call this folder folder A). Create a new folder within this folder (so create a new folder in folder A). Without changing the name or doing anything to this new folder, move this to the trash by the key combination Command+Delete or simply select "Move to Trash" from the File menu (remember the new folder's name is still highlighted, and you have not tried to change it). The effect is that the main folder (folder A) will be moved to the trash. This is very dangerous. Lot of times when i move an item to the trash I hit empty trash right away, and with this bug I could be accidentally deleting lot of things on my computer.

This should be fixed, becasue lot of times I accitentaly create a new folder in Finder, instead of opening a new Finder window. In cases like this I just hit Command+delete, and the whole folder just disappears. It can be very annoying.

Apple, please fix this!

Never seen that myself, but then I hardly ever use the column view.
What happens if you do it in the top-level of a volume?

I gave it a try on the top level of my Volume, but it did not do anything. I guess you have to be below that level somewhere.

Ok, I can reproduce it. Seems to happen just while the name of the new folder is still editable.
Nasty bug.

if it's highlighted, doesn't that mean it's "selected"?

There's the highlighting of the text area when you can type and edit the name, and the highlighting of the whole item, and it seems the bug is related to that: after you freshly created a new folder and it is still editable the finder thinks wrongly the previous item (the surrounding folder) is still selected. But the item with the edit focus should always be the actually selected one.

I run into that bug all the time. Drives me nuts.

Fortunately the folder is still in the Trash, but it's supremely annoying.

You can use the Finder's Undo to get rid of an accidentally created folder.

Did you send feedback to Apple? They have a feedback page here http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/

It's nice to let other users know, but why not tell Apple. If you've done this already, you can ignore my comment.

I did send feedback to Apple, and actually this has been reported earlier as well. I am not sure where did it get discovered, but it was either 10.2.2, or 10.2.3.

This is serious enough I think, that it needs attention. New users can run into many trouble with this bug.

This is probably a "feature". I have the feeling this is because the Finder sits on top of the file system and isn't as tightly integrated as in Classic MacOS. I think that when a new folder is created in the finder it only gets actually created in the system after you press enter, which means the delete command works on that which was next up the hierarchy.

I don't know if I would call it a bug, because the top folder is still the highlighted folder when you create new folders within the top folder.

It actually does as intended, and some might like it that way - some don't.

I think it would be enough if they just brought back the size of what you're about to delete when you go to empty the trash. This was always welcome information in earlier OSes, and I really can't see why it is still not given now, especially in light of things such as this. Personally, I only use icon view - a hangover from System 7, the last one that I used over a long period - and would prefer it if I could use that in open / save dialogs as well. Choices are good and should be more widely available.

It's not a bug. The file hasn't been created yet, and you can see that the icon is not highlighted.

What I think will be a simpler solution is going back to the old System 4 or 5 way of doing things:

New Folder --> Dialog Box titled "New Folder"

Contains: Folder icon on left, text field containing "Create a folder in &location" with a button 'change location' and an editable text field.
In vino veritas.

Apple published an AppleCare Knowledge Base article about this ages ago.
