Choose "attach file" from the edit menu in apple's mail app, navigate to anywhere and select a file and close the finder popuup. Now go back to "attach file" and the default "starting location appears to highlight" your boot drive or partition, but actually it is not selected. Choosing a location from the pull down menu has no effect. Must click on drive or partition to begin navigating. This remains an annoyance...
