While in the Bash shell, i want to remap an Option-Left-Arrow to an Esc-b and Option-Right-Arrow to an Esc-f

How do you do that? I know it should be simple, but i don't know how to go about it. From reading the Bash man page, i glean it might have something to do with the .inputrc file, but how to remap arrow keys, especially with modifiers, is elusive.

Thanks.

Take a look in the archives for the X11 mailing list. There are some messages about setting up the .xinitrc file which include info about keyboard re-mapping.

I'm sure there's more than one X11 mailing list archive in cyberspace. Could you perhaps point me to the one to which you refer so i can search it? I've looked but haven't found anything useful so far. Thanks.

I think he meant Apple's X11 list at http://www.lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/x11-users, there are indeed some posts about keyboard mapping, but they're for Apple's X11, not for the 'normal' terminal.

Thanks for the link. Yep, you're right; it doesn't help any.

Maybe a closer look at 'man bash' will help you.

Perhaps. I became frustrated by the Bash manual and decided to post here, hoping someone might understand it better. The discussion in the Bash manual of remapping seemed very terse and simplistic, and did not define the syntax very well at all. I gleaned enough to probably do a simple remap, like a Dvorak keyboard, but how to define macros, arrow keys and (not surprisingly) Apple-specific modifier keys (e.g. command key) didn't appear to be covered. Specificially, i'm having trouble understanding the following:

1) How to specify an arrow key
2) How to specify a modifier key, such as option or command
3) Defining a macro (i.e. multiple key keystrokes)

Hence my post here. Was hoping someone would either know how to do this, or could point me to a good reference.
