I need to turn the setting on for "wake for network administrator access" but on the computer that I am trying to turn that option on, it doesn't appear in the Energy saver panel. I don't get the option tab to appear under the energy saver panel, it is an older all-in-one G3. So I was wondering if there is a way to turn this option on via the command line? Any help would be appreciated (also, I am aware that I could set the computer to never sleep but that isn't the immediate solution that I am looking for). Thanks

If you don't have the option in the Energy Saver panel, the machine most likely doesn't support that capability.

On a side note, does anyone know what 'magic packet' to send a sleeping Mac to wake it from its slumber...?
Specifically, I would like to know how to do this from a PC, as I generally ssh in from a PC, and not a Mac.

Try sudo pmset womp on from terminal
and man pmset for details
I haven't tried this myself yet. I noticed I could set my iMac DV 400mhz to wake for administrator access under OS 9 but not under OS 10.2.
I'll have to give the terminal command a shot as well.

Wake-on-LAN is available on these computers: - Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) or later
- Power Mac G4 Cube (all models)
- PowerBook (FireWire) or later
- iBook (all models)
- iMac (Early 2001) or later
According to Apple.
You can find a CLI utility for it here.

Thanks for the replies. I tried the pmset womp and got a bus error so I don't think that is going to work. Tried to pull up the plist for powermanagement but it didn't contain the info for wake on LAN, so I am guessing the older beast doesn't support that function. Oh well I guess throwing the ball at the computer from across the room will have to do, don't worry it isn't a hard ball.
