Scroll wheel lock.
Click middle button.
Move mouse.
FLY down page.
OS X already has native support for scroll wheels, I'm sure the folks at Unsanity or some similar hack joint could make a nifty little tool to make the scroll wheel/middle button on supported mice work like it does in Windows.
Just a thought.

I love that feature, although my kensington studio mouse has a button above the "scroll pad" that I set to do this very function.
also the "scroll pad" has areas at the top and the bottom of the pad that If you press them it does auto scroll very effectively

Wait a second. I think this is exactly how my mouse behaves. Press scrollwheel, move mouse, and fly down the page or wherever.

Then youve got a better mouse than me. i have a Wacom Graphire2 and it only has basic scroll wheel support. Pity.

If that's the Windows feature where you press the wheel and you get an up/down arrow-on-a-circle icon..., then I hope we never get it... HATE that in Windows
I like my wheel the way it is... click and it clicks (as in MOUSE-3). Scroll and it scrolls.
At work, I "click" by mistake and get stuck in scroll-mode. Yick :-)
Goes to show, I guess its all what you are used to. Best of luck getting that feature if its what makes ya happy
Cheers,

Kensington mice have that functionality. I personally use my scroll button for other functions.

Funny thing is I hate Windows and have been steadily using Macs since the 512k... I always envied just this one feature ;]
Makes browinsg web pages and large documents such a breeze...

That feature always scrolls the page way too fast, always overshooting whatever you were trying to scroll to by a large margin.
Unless, of course, you were trying to go to the bottom or top of the page, but heck, that's what home and end are good for...

I actually dislike that feature in Windows - I always use the scroll bars instead.
Couldn't you just do that (Use the scroll bars)?

it's great. if you move the mouse very slightly down, it'll scroll. you don't need to touch the mouse, just sit back and read what scrolls up. great for forums, slashdot, and even ars articles.
yeah, instead of scrolling so many pixles at a time, we scroll by lines....makes things stuttery. just checked, slightly better in Safari, but still jittery.

That feature is pretty much useless for scanning, and terrible for move through a document fast.
We've got Page Up/Down for a reason, you know.

Where does the home and end button work though? I have an iBook and these keys are written on the left and right arrow keys but they don't seem to do anything except scroll left to right......or command L/R moves the page back forward in Safari...

Same here. I never use the wheel button to get into "scroll-mode" in Windows, and it would be irritating on my Mac. Not saying I discourage someone from doing such a thing for those who want it, but I'd be upset if it ever made it's way into the OS.

Hold down the fn (function) key (far left side of the keyboard, next to the Control key) to use the home/end keys. Also works for the up/down (page up/page down) keys, or any key that has an alternate key printed in grey.
