OS10.1.5 (running classic within osx for quark)
My wife uses Quark for page layout work. She constantly needs to convert the .EPS files from Quark into .PDF files. When she uses Adobe Distiller (in classic) it will only convert 1 page at a time, this can be very time consuming for documents that are 40+ pages. Not only is that a pain in the azz, but then she must go into Acrobat and takes those 40 different pdf files and convert them into 1 PDF file.
What I am looking for is some program (wanting OSX native) that will convert the .EPS file into 1 large PDF file that will contain all 40 pages with out going through the time consuming steps she is currently performing.
Also we found a OSX native program that will convert .EPS into .PDF’s called “Pstill” but one problem we had was that when we converted files that had large images the .PDF file size would be 50+megs. When we used Distiller to convert the same file it would be less then 1meg in size. The client would not like to receive hundreds of 50+meg files all day long.
If anyone has any ideas that would help us out I (and she) would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
dino

Ghostscript can convert eps to pdf from the command line. If you install TeXShop you can avoid the command line altogether - dropping a postscript file on the TeXShop icon automatically converts it.
You can download installers for both at http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/texshop.html.

Did you check out some of PStill's preferences and settings? It can set it in different ways to compress the output, including the images.

PDF can store vector based art correct? My guess is that Pstill converted to non-vector based images which made the files much larger. This doesn't really help you but it's food for thought.

what i did for when i had to assemble pdfs was:
1. make eps files
2. import into quark
3. make .pdf from quark (print to .ps file and then drop that into distiller)
that would save you steps and come out nicely as it's vector and you can position the eps in quark if they are different size and etc
where is she getting 40+ eps files from? from the same document? i hope you know you can print t Quark documents o distiller (or to a .ps fileand manually drag into distiller). just asking as i find it weird to be working with so many .eps files.

Install Ghostscript (7 is the latest version).
Command line:
epstopdf [filename.eps]
will give you [filename.pdf]

eps files shouldn't be more than a single page. Why aren't you using ps files?

am I missing the point, or is there a reason from going quark-eps-pdf? with 'pdf export' (Quark XT) you just choose it from a menu, and its done- you can set up different compression, embed fonts, etc all from it- but you need Distiler for it to work.
