I am running 10.2.2 on my Pismo 400 and have 125mb free on my HD. When I run software update to install 10.2.4 combo updater, it only shows that the update required 70 some odd mb of space. But when I go to install it, i get an error message saying I need 689mb of space free. What's going on?

The combo installer itself is ~70 MB.
You need more HD space.
