I just received a used system with a fresh 10.2 install. I've set up all my prefrences, copied files over and installed a few apps, but now I see there is no OS9 installed for Classic mode. Do I need to reinstall/reformat with the OS10 disc or do I need to install OS9 in addition to my orginal 10.2 install?

You just need to install OS 9 along with X. OS X will then search your disk and find your System Folder.
I've never installed 9 after X before, someone else surely has though.

is there an option on the 10 install that allows you to not install 9? if so I'm guessing my best bet would be to reinstall 10 from scratch and re-dump all my files, etc. I want to do this right even if it takes a couple extra hours of time.

As long as "Install OS 9 drivers" was checked when the drive was formatted, you can install OS 9 after the fact. The easiest way to check this is to boot up from the OS 9 CD. If you can see the hard drive mounted on the desktop, you are good to go. If you can't, you need to reformat the drive. Also, when using the oS 9 installer, you need to enable "Perform Clean Install" (or words to that effect) otherwise the installer defaults to update mode and will not let you install (since it can't update OS X to OS 9).

Art Vandelay of Vandelay Industries? Very nice. Looks like a reformat is in order. Hey, at least I know I did it the clean way.

I seem to be in a similar situation as corp miler: I did a clean install of 10.2 and then realized I needed 9.2 installed. I was going to start over again with 9 and checked off "Perform Clean Install", but when 9 was done installing I booted right into 10.2.
I'm writing this from 10.2--am I ok with this set up?
