According to this posting in a german forum (macnews.de), Panther is expected to be released this may. Gravis is one of the biggest Apple resellers in Germany. Could they have information about upcoming releases?
Here is a Sherlock translation of the posting:

--- 8< ---
According to a Mail, which I got today from grave, is to function the
P800 with iSync under 10.3.. According to these Mail is 10.3. in May
to presumably come.

In addition does someone have information, also to the date?

In the forum, the P800 was written never with iSync would already
function, since IrMc does not go - does one need in addition? The T39m
and T68i function also, do not go not over SyncML?

If someone has in addition information to the logs and the technique,
I would be very grateful!
--- >8 ---

I love these machine translations. :-)

Maybe a demo of it since May is the WWDC?

I think that a demo/announcement is more likely, since a release 3 months away would probably have some developer feedback by now. Also the change to making people sign NDAs and be >18 to attend WWDC seems to be a permanent feature, hinting Apple will make some major announcements there.

May? Maybe a preview, but I wouldn't expect it to be released to us schmoes until August-September (one year after 10.2).

From what I've heard from my friends who have access to this stuff, Panther is a lot further away than 3 months. The WWDC demo is what this site is talking about.

Actually I hope that is not for free, since I signed up for an ADC Student Membership yesterday. i. e. I'm going to save more money if it is not for free.

I don't think so. It appears as if the work is in progress, but barely alpha stuff. I'd think we'll see a September release.

Given the lack of heated build number debates here on the MacNN Forum, I would guess Panther is much, much further away than a May release.

Has there been any scuttlebutt on whether there will be a publically-accessible QuickTime stream of the 10.3 preview (if there is one, of course)? I'm thinking back to last year at about this time with 10.2.

Nobody has officially said there will be a preview yet, so it's a bit early to say

Apple doesn't stream WWDC keynotes. Obviously if they did that, there might be quite a few developers that would decide not to go.

No way in hell will we be able to instal 10.3 before September. No way.

I thought 10.2 was a great upgrade and I would be happy to pay for 10.3.

You obviously don't watch Felicity or Dawson's Creek or any of those other touchy feely teen TV shows that prescribe the rules for civilized teen interaction.

Personally, I'm quite happy with 10.2. I'd prefer they take their time with Panther and optimize the hell out of it. In the meantime it would be nice to have better Apple apps (improved iApps, an all new Appleworks, improved iSync, better bluetooth support...etc)

I think you'll see Panther demoed at WWDC, for relase in July/August.

Why? Because the new IBM-based machines will not be ready until January, so they need something to show at MacWorld.

Great!

Only problem is, MacWorld occurs in July, which isn't fall.

I'm hopeful that Apple could show a 970-based machine at MacWorld and release them in say, September, but I think the more pessimistic approach may be more likely - they show 10.3 in July and don't release 970-based machines until January.

Of course they could release the machines without a MacWorld introduction, but I don't think they're going to want to pass up the chance to make a big splash.

Wade
