I have X11 running and now want to install Gnome via Fink. Do I need to install Metacity prior to the Gnome install or will the Gnome install pick up the need for Metacity?

Fink will handle the dependancies for you - that's its purpose.

Except that GNOME (I think the FINK tree has version 1.4) does not need MetaCity - it's just a window manager, like IceWM, SawFish, Window Maker, etc. My guess is that you will have to install GNOME, then install MetaCity and configure GNOME to use it as the default window manager.

While MetaCity is the default WM for GNOME 2.x, even then, it is not required and can be substituted with another WM. I don't know what the FINK install of GNOME 1.4 will use as it's default WM, but it won't be MetaCity. The FINK tree (unstable branch) has MetaCity 2.?, which is not compatable with GNOME 1.4.
