qtimageserver
What is it? And how do I stop it running?
I guess its something to do with quicktime (duh), and I can kill it, but how do I stop it starting up each time I reboot? It takes up about 60MB which is quite alot considering I only have 384MB total on my iBook.
I tracked it down to:
System: Library: Frameworks: ApplicationServices.framework: Versions: A: Frameworks: HIServices.framework: Versions: A: Resources:
But I don't think it needs to be running all the time?
And while I'm on the subject, what processes are pppd and pbs?
Thanks

don't know the answer but the "pppd" process is your internet connection, it's always running when you are online.

And "pbs" is the pasteboard server. Quite obvious once you know it

If it's not being used, it'll be swapped out to disk, so it really doesn't matter if it's using some ram. If it is being used, you probably want it running.

Right - just because the process has a 60M chunk doesn't mean that any physical RAM is in use.

And that 60M probably isn't all memory in use by it anyway -- which column are you looking at? the VSIZE column includes SHARED memory, and will be much larger than the physical amount of RAM occupied by a process.

Yeah, chances are it isn't in active memory anyway.
PBS has been cleared up; I'm assuming PPPD is the point-to-point protocol daemon or something similar. You have dial-up Internet, right? Or xDSL?

A search on Google suggests that qtimageserver is what the Finder uses to display icon previews. Do you have that option on?
