I'm trying to start X in console mode (Darwin) under Mac OS X, but everytime I execute startx or X I get this error initCGDisplaystate cannot map Display interlocks. Can anyone guess what the problem is, or does Apple's implementation not work under console/darwin?

Console mode is when, instead of logging in as a user, you type >console in the login box. This drops down into Darwin, the Unix base of Mac OS X. No Aqua, nothing but text only unless you you have Xfree86 installed in which case you can have a GUI. In this enviroment only command line apps and X Windows will work.

A terminal window let you issue Unix commands to the system.

There really should be some way to "merge" Apple's X11 and XDarwin. I already have them running side-by-side under Quartz, but I can't get XDarwin to start from the console. Does anyone know the startup process for X in detail enough to know what might be amiss?

In summary:

Apple's X11 works fine.
XDarwin works fine rootless.
XDarwin works fine rooted.
XDarwin does not run from the console.
