I just ordered a new "12 Powerbook. I am a "switcher" and can't wait to get my new laptop. I have used WordPerfect (Yes, I know the world likes WORD!). Does anyone know if Corel will be making a OS X version of WordPerfect?

While nothing is impossible, it's very unlikely. Corel had pulled it's word processor out of the mac market before OS 9 was released, I think.
You can still find a version that will probably run in classic mode if you do a search on the web...

Apparently, WordPerfect used to be available on NeXTStep. It would be interesting if Corel would just open up that code, since they are never going to do anything with it...
It's things like this that sometimes make me feel I should just be using fully open-sourced software...

It was ported to Java at some point. Ran like a dog in OS 8.something, but it ran. I wonder if anyone still has this?

Actually, WordPerfect ran nicely under linux as well. I'm sure there's still a binary around there somewhere. It would probably work, since I think it contained only statically linked libraries.
I'm sure with some (relatively) minor code-tweaking, it would work under X11.

This really brings up the question as to what is the better non-native or non-Aqua environment: Classic or X11?

It depends. Classic is less reliable than X11, but the interface on X11 programs typically sucks.
Besides, you can drag and drop from a Classic window to an OS X window. That's integration!

An advice: better download it right now (on your windows machine or on a computer of one of your friends). These more or less private download sites arise and vanish from time to time just like mushrooms

As a newbie to the Mac world, if I have purchased a 12" Powerbook that runs in OS X, will I be able to run programs that run in 9 only? Will OS 9 also be on my Powerbook laptop when it arrives as it was on the Ibook I used for about 2 weeks as a trial from my Apple rep? Or--am I stuck with OS X only on the new Powerbook. I know this is probably a very dumb question, but remember all I have ever worked with in Windows! Thanks.

Your Powerbook will come with OS 9. OS 9 programs will run under "Classic" which is basically an OS 9 virtual machine - that is, running the entire OS within OS X.

It ran under WINE (excluding all posibilities of it running on the Mac), and from what I hear, was utter crap.

No, it didn't*. I used it for about six months, and it was a native *NIX version. How do I know? I had a small hd, and wine was not installed. Also, all of the screen graphics were not 'windows-esque', but rather redone for linux. As for it being a dog, it wasn't fantastic, but was far more stable and useable than under windows (that being a windows problem, and not necessarily a Corel problem). I probably would have stuck with the program longer if I hadn't discovered LyX and TeX.
* Note, I could be totally out to lunch. Wine may have been compiled into the program, but it certainly didn't seem to be the case. Furthermore, we're talking about 1998 here. IIRC, Wine was barely able to run the ms-dos prompt, let alone a complete word processing program with full printing and graphics support.

Well Word Perfect didn't need Wine to install because it had Wine built in.
