A folder appeared at the top level of my hard drive about a week and a half ago named "sw"

Inside is another folder named "lib" and inside that folder are the following files:

libcrypto.0.9.6.dylib
libcurl.2.0.2.dylib
libcurl.2.dylib
libdl.0.dylib
libssl.0.9.6.dylib

I haven't noticed any strange behavior since the folder appeared. Can I get rid of it or make it invisible?

Did you (by chance) activate >show hidden folders< in the prefpane?

You can thank McAffee for that.

You can make it invisible. If you don't want to use Virex 7.2 you can also delete it.

No, that would have shown all of my other unix folders at the top level like "dev" and "bin" etc. etc. I can't tell if this folder is leftover from some software I tried or if it's a vital part of the system.

Did you install fink? Fink makes a folder called /sw. The contents don't look like something fink installs though.

See Developer's answer. Virex 7.2 installed that /sw directory.

Thanks for the help. I'm a little annoyed with McAfee for installing a folder like that right on the top level of my HD. Why would that be necessary?

Cause they don't know better?
Maybe you should give them a feedback.

Yes it is idiotic, yes they're clueless, yes it's incompatbile with fink. They obviously decided to use fink to install some libraries for them because they're too inept to include them with the application.
