My iBook has been acting very unstable lately. It stated yesterday when I tried to install Photoshop 7 using the VISE Installer. It froze up - "Installer VISE has unexpectedly quit..." I downloaded Photoshop with Acquisition, but scanned it for viruses prior to unstuffing it--all clean. Since then, every time I use the scoll bars on any window(except for Safari), that app quits ("******* has unexpectedly quit..."). Also, my menu bar (on the top right) has become blank. Date and time has disappeared since the Photoshop install, I also had AliasMenu running in the menu bar, but that has disappeared too. When I got nervous, I ran NAV8 on my whole computer, but only 2 files came up as problem areas:

/library/webserver/documents/index.html.he.iso8859-8
index.html.ru.cp-1251

--both of these couldn't be examined b/c it said that they were missing the first part of the archive.

For all the programs that crash, the log begins like this:

Date/Time: 2003-02-23 11:27:22 -0500
OS Version: 10.2.4 (Build 6I32)
Host: rozwado1.user.msu.edu

Command: Finder
PID: 624

Exception: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (0x0002)
Code[0]: 0x00000002Code[1]: 0x96b46fac
(I can send you the rest of my log, but I cut it short here.)

So, I need help in determining 1) that this is a virus and 2) what kind of virus it is, so I can understand how to combat it. My friend has the Norton Systemworks CD, so I will be using that when he gets back in town. I have the option to reinstall, but would rather not due to the backup procedure. Thanks, Nick

Two things.

When you pirate, you are on your own.

The other is that VISE installer that Adobe uses is so much crap that it could well have damaged your Hard Drive.

Thank you Adobe!
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Sounds more like hard disk corruption to me. It's highly unlikely to be a virus.

yeah, vise sucks.

however, if you have nav8, you might also be running norton os x. that screws things up, and having nav8 active while trying to install something is a big no-no.

Shouldn't be a HD problem, I just got a new IBM 40GB a few months ago. So what do you guys think--erase and re-install OS X?

You are really dumb. If you are not going to buy the software at least keep your mouth shut. Now everyone in the world including Adobe knows you stole thier product.

You do know steeling software is illegal right? Don't pirate software, throw it away and buy a ligit copy.

..

Each on his own, don't trow stones on the poor fellow. I guess he got the picture during the previous posts. I am not defending pirating but there is no point in making a parade out of this.

Avon. I don't know what how you were educated in Livingston, NJ, but I have a hunch that it was not in spelling.
Let's try a few:
T-H-E-I-R,
S-T-E-A-L-I-N-G,
and L-E-G-I-T
Who's the dumb one now?

Get off my case - I am just a college student who delivers pizza on my spare time to pay for tuition. I cannot afford to simply go out and buy Photoshop 7. OK, I pirated, but that was only because our software server at school was down and I couldn't get it from there. Don't be a jackass.

I agree with the people that its probably some sort of corruption of the filesystem. try running DiskWarrior over it, else copy your files off erase it and reinstall. And as far as viruses are concerned, are there any for OS X yet?

Sorry buddy, you pirate, you lose.

Don't post here, we don't condone Piracy nor do we provide support when something goes wrong in this situation.
