What is the purpose of indexing your HD? Just out of curiosity?

It enables you search for not only filenames, but also through contents of files with the Finder's Find window.

That's your call. Find By Content cannot see inside files it has not indexed, so if you don't index frequently enough you'll find that you're working on out-of-date data. But it does take time -sometimes a long time- so doing it too often is a pain.

A good medium is to do it once a week. I think the system may actually do this for you, as part of the system maintenance scripts.
